neighbour using my house number-should i worry?

I'l just explain, we live in number 22,our house has been here for yonks, when the road was first built. My neighbour built his house later on the plot next to us..he calls his house no 22a. fair enough, no problem you would think. yet all the 15yrs we have lived here, he has never put a house number on his door.

his post often gets delivered to ours..its addressed to him/his wife/his daughter,at number 22. he knows about it because in the past, we have passed on his mail and joked about the postman getting confused! still, he did nothing about it. the latest thing was a gas bill, i rang bgas and explained, they said they could'nt understand it as it was showing on their computers as 22a not 22, even though the mail was clearly addressed to him at our house number.

we've since fallen out and don't speak because he tried to turn his property into a business address from residential and we objected strongly(another long story). he has moved away but still owns the property..now there are several people living lodging there. they too..use our house number as we have had their mail. Am I missing something here? whats he up to do ya think? it crossed my mind to check my credit history reports but should i be worried about this..my credit file should be very good..if these people defaulted on payments anywhere would it affect my scoring? thanks any thoughts welcome:rotfl:

I think that if I was in your shoes, I'd want to check my credit report because these things do generally go by house number. If he's always been honest and signed up for things with "22a" and not "22", then you should be fine, but if he's rented the property out to others who perhaps don't know that they're living at 22a and not 22, that could cause problems.

You may not be speaking to the owner of the property any more, but the current tennants might be perfectly reasonable people - have you talked to them to address the issue? (although I agree there's nothing much they can do about their landlord)

Do as i have done whenever i have moved house,i take all thier mail that comes through your door, and write on it,"not known at this address, return to sender",and if its a junk mail etc also put "please remove from mailing list"Then post back into post box.The companies who get them back pay double postage, and it does work. You may have to do this 2-3times but it always stops.:T
If the nieghbours ask if they have had any mail, just say only 22 mail comes through your door not 22a,stressing the 22a bit! They will soon call up the companies they need mail from and tell them their correct address.
Finally keep checking your credit file too.;)
TO FINISH LAST, FIRST YOU HAVE TO FINISH....
  • Check your credit report, and just send back any post return to sender. If you are giving everything to him or his tenants then he has no motivation to get the address changed.

Sometimes a 'new' house number doesn't come up for the postcode when searching for it, even it it has been there a while. We had this problem occasionally when renting a 4B house (new infill house). With one supplier, we had to have our bills addressed to 'Plot next to 6'!

So there might be an innocent explanation, they try to buy something, put in their postcode, computer doesn't give an option of 22A so they pick 22. Worth chatting to the tenants about it, see if they can throw any light on it. Always best to try and get on with neighbours, if possible.

I can understand your concerns though, with all the talk of identity theft, we all have to be aware I guess.

You misunderstood the post... what he meant to say was something like:

"If one were to live in house 22a (as your neighbour does), then why would one (in this case your neighbour) wish to say he lives at 22"

Took me a little while to work out too...

id shred the post and forget about it. not a crime as if there is no 22a listed next door, technically you cant be held liable as you dont know the address next door.

if post is addressed to just '22' then if its not for you, you can destroy it. everyones a winner!

I don't want to worry you, but i'd be concerned, they could be applying for credit, catalogues, cards, bank accounts and saying they live at 22, knowing that it can come to you and you past it on, any debts would be registered to your house, if next door (22a) doesn't exist. Could be a headache to sort out if they ran up debts ok they aren't in your name but they have your address. If the post man puts letters through your door but its addressed to 22a then fine, pass it on, postie made a mistake. I'd probably speak with the new tenants and say they need to correct the address, if they don't then i would return the letters in the post box marked not known at this address, eventually they will stop. I signed up for that free months trial to check my credit report, interesting reading, thankfully all is ok and i cancelled a week later no problem, you do have to cancel by phone though and they suggest to wait until the month is up, probably hoping that you will forget and then they can charge your card, but i said no cancel it now. Hope you get it sorted.
