2MB upgrade to 10MB

Hi
That speed tester is hopeless - possibly the worst one I have ever seen. It showed my connection as being 1Mbps - I'm on the 20Mbps service and get the full 20Mbps...
Best way to test your speed is to download two files simultaneously from two different sites and add together the reported speeds.
Download one file from here, and one from here at the same time and see what happens.
How are you connecting your modem to the PC? If it's USB, you really need to ditch that and use ethernet. The faster speeds really begin to cause problems with USB.

Hi everyone.
When I did a speed test it was coming out at just under the 10MB. However the speed test also told me by mypostcode that my local exchange is only able to support just under 6MB (why am I paying for 10MB if I can't ever get it you ask!!)
I'm connected by ethernet on a 255 modem.
I sometimes get a message coming up saying the page has an error and do I want to continue running scripts on it. Has this anything to do with slowing things down?
It's a laptop I've got and the fan starts going into overdrive when things are about to slow down.......here we go again!!!0 -
If you're with Virgin media surely the adsl check isn't applicable as you're using a cable modem not an adsl line ?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

You have other problems... Nothing to do with Virgin Media I'm afraid!solidarity wrote: »It's a laptop I've got and the fan starts going into overdrive when things are about to slow down.......here we go again!!!
When that next happens, press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC which should bring Task Manager up. Sort the column by CPU usage and you should see one or more processes using 100% CPU - that's your culprit.
Also, if you are currently using Internet Explorer, you could consider trying Safari or Firefox.

!!
That's down to poorly coded websites, you can turn the error message off in one of the options for the browser, it shouldn't affect downloads etc, but may slow the page loading (nothing that can be done at your end to speed it up if it's an error on the page itself).
Also things like adverts from third party sites can slow websites down massively (on some sites if I turn adblock off in firefox the site takes ages to load, when it's turned on blocking the ads the site loads much faster).0 -
Thanks for your answers everyone!!0
