2MB upgrade to 10MB

Hi.
I recently increased my speed from 2 to 10mb (I'm with Virgin Media). Ever since then, I've noticed the computer is going really slow and hanging quite a lot. It's really annoying me.
It was running fine on the 2mb. It's connected to my upgrade in some way I'm sure.
Anyone got any ideas what the problem may be/something I need to do to the computer to get the faster speed?
Thanks.

Since the upgrade have you changed your usage habits as a speed upgrade on the connection does nothing to your PC?0

No, I've not changed my usage habits.
Do I need to do something to the modem maybe?0 -
A package upgrade on an ISP is normally just a case of a packet hit on the router/ modem so it's nothing that actually touches your PC. What you may need to do is make sure it's nothing on the PC causing the issue. Do you know how many things are starting on boot up, when was the last time you fully scanned the pc and when the PC slows down is it the pc slowing down or just the browser itself?0

Yeah, I thought it was just a hit on the modem and nothing more. The PC does a scan every couple of weeks unprompted (slows things down even more). I clear out the temp internet files and cookies quite often.
When things start to slow down, the fan starts going on overdrive and the pages take ages to download. Sometimes it comes up with (Not Responding) at the very top of the page and I try to give it a jolt by switching to my page on the Task Manager.
This has happened since the 'upgrade'.
Thanks for the time you've took to respond PaulK.0 -

Are you saying that the computer itself has slowed down or the network speed (i.e. remote apps/sites that are on the other end of the network)? If you run apps local to your computer (wordprocessors, spreadsheets, media players etc) are they OK?
If it's the network - it's a bit of a longshot but you could have a look into changing the MTU settings.0 -
It seems to be the network speed that's slowed down. WP and media players are running at normal speed.0

OK, then run a speedtester from time to time http://promos.mcafee.com/speedometer/
if the results says it's consistently worse than what you have been sold, you have some ammo to go back to the ISP with. If the speed test always looks OK but surfing etc is still ridiculously slow, try investigating MTU settings route (google it)0 -
What modem are you using to connect to the internet, and what are you using to connect the modem to the PC? (is it a proper network cable between the PC and modem, or a USB connection?).
Some modems don't work well with 10mb, mainly the older one.
Iif it's a small blue or black one - the 120, 250 or 255 it should be fine, other models can have problems.
Likewise if you're using a USB connection to the modem that can be problematic (they don't even offer it on the latest modems due to it's limitations).0
