So, she loves pirates and she loves the sea. I've built a pirates chest and have bought the ring, my idea is that we have a nice romantic evening meal then go on a treasure hunt where she finds the buried treasure, opens the chest to find the sparkling beautiful ring in there.

Just wanted to say that is so so lovely! She will be amazed! :T

I agree with not putting the actual ring in the chest - far too risky IMO. I reckon you should put a note saying "close your eyes" as suggested above, then go down on one knee. That's a mix of unusual and traditional! When I opened my eyes to my now-fiance kneeling in front of me it was the best moment ever... :smileyhea

Aww, now that's quite a sweet idea, actually.

thinking you could even build on the idea.

I'm just thinking off the cuff here, but you could do something like set challenges at each bit of treasure...So you get to one, she opens it, clue says "solve this riddle to get your next clue", then "say the alphabet backward" or whatever else - so when it comes to the last one and it says "close your eyes and count backward from 20" or something, she might be pretty surprised when she opens her eyes...

I think your pirate idea sounds lovely :) Id go with the above idea and make a few steps in the treasure hunt, sounds like fun
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!
  • Could you do Whitby? There's a square rigger moored there called the Grand Turk...she's open to the public during the day. The crew are usually really amenable, and would no doubt have a word with the skipper to keep you aboard after the tourists have gone, so you could hide the ring aboard & propose there. Whitby is a lovely place to be in the winter too- lots of romantic little hideaways & cottages to let.
If you're interested, let me know- I used to crew her so I could give you some advice.

    Good luck with the proposal!

    This is absolute genius!!

I've sent you a private mail.

What about on the Discovery in Dundee I know it's not really a Pirate ship but my it was Captain Scotts ship for his Antartic expedition but my dd always screams Pirates when we pass it.
    Booo!!!
  • how wonderfully romantic, your girl is very lucky
  • just wanted to add my best wishes i'm sure she will be delighted - make sure and let us know how you get on
Comp Wins 2011 : Cant wait to start listing everything:j:j:j
  • good luck with this, it sounds like you've really put a lot of thought into it and you're making it as perfect as possible.

Like others have said, don't put the actual ring in the chest! I like the idea of the note. It would be cool if you could do it at sunset...
  • Sunset is a great idea - see, I knew people on here could help me add the final touches!
