I need help with my proposal!!

I've finally taken the decision (well, I actually decided when I first met her) that I'm going to propose to my girlfriend in the next few weeks - I just need to make sure I get it right!

So, she loves pirates and she loves the sea. I've built a pirates chest and have bought the ring, my idea is that we have a nice romantic evening meal then go on a treasure hunt where she finds the buried treasure, opens the chest to find the sparkling beautiful ring in there. But How?!!

First off, I'm skint, I'm thinking of a beach in the north of Scotland, like the isle of harris - so need to find a cheap place to stay that has easy access to a quiet sandy beach.

Then how do I get the treasure chest buried without her knowing, and without the possibility of someone else finding it with a £2k ring inside! (now you know why I'm skint!).

I'll be travelling up from Glasgow - should be able to borrow a car, so transport should be easy enough. Just finding a nice romantic place to stay and organising the rest has been taxing my brain!

Come on you great folks - give me your best ideas of how I can do this and make sure my other half has the most memorable night of her life!

What ever you do don't put a 2k ring in the chest and then bury it!

Can't you just bury the chest, with a note in side it saying "Close your eyes"

As she does, go down on one knee, present the ring from your pocket and pop the question in a beautiful way that you want.

That's a good idea Ryco, along the lines of what I was going to suggest

How lovely OP, I hope it all goes well for you x

Had to have a bit of a giggle when you say she likes pirates, my 6 year old son is well in to pirates at the moment so could have lent you a chest and a beard and eye patch :D

Good idea, but why don't you put a cheap little ring in the chest then do what Ryco suggests, pull out the real one and tell her to take her pick! I'd love that :)

I think it sounds like a wonderful idea and you obviously love her very much, I am very jealous!
  • Great idea - think I'll fill the chest with toy jewellery including a nice big plastic ring!

Then she can take her pick from the one in my pocket!

So now I just need a cheap romantic place to stay with easy access to a beach - preferably a small B&B or holiday cottage so we're on our own.

Aww, now that's quite a sweet idea, actually.

thinking you could even build on the idea.

I'm just thinking off the cuff here, but you could do something like set challenges at each bit of treasure...So you get to one, she opens it, clue says "solve this riddle to get your next clue", then "say the alphabet backward" or whatever else - so when it comes to the last one and it says "close your eyes and count backward from 20" or something, she might be pretty surprised when she opens her eyes...

Fantastic idea, I am sure she will love it. A small warning though:

A girl at work has recently had her birthday, and her boyfriend decided to propose by leaving riddles and clues around their house for her to follow to find the ring etc.

Great idea, but sadly he set her off when they got back home having been at her surprise party (which he also organised) in a cocktail bar for 5 hours before hand.

She was too drunk to follow the clues and couldn't understand why he wanted her to keep going with them so much! He had to stop her giggling, find the ring and explain it all 3 times before she understood what was going on! She was and still is extreamly happy and has an entertaining story to tell so remained delighted.

Just go for a walk along a romantic beach and get down on one knee...much better than faffing about with treasure chests, imho!

  • Could you do Whitby? There's a square rigger moored there called the Grand Turk...she's open to the public during the day. The crew are usually really amenable, and would no doubt have a word with the skipper to keep you aboard after the tourists have gone, so you could hide the ring aboard & propose there. Whitby is a lovely place to be in the winter too- lots of romantic little hideaways & cottages to let.
If you're interested, let me know- I used to crew her so I could give you some advice.

    Good luck with the proposal!
