You do have a choice though. Some students don't want to or can't go home: not just postgrads either.

and at the end of the day, if Unite agree to reduce the rental period down from 51 weeks, how will they recoup their 'loss'? By raising the rents so they get 51 weeks' worth in over a short period.

well i have my own house and go away on hol for 2weeks of the year so could i get my mortgage docked for those 2weeks?!!!

sorry not having a go, just think rent is rent and of course trheywill charge you for the year bcos how would they fill the rooms for the rest of the time? it is unfair but then life is a b**tch.
if they are keeping th accomdoation open for youy they will charge you, it is your choice to go home for the holidays (i am presuming?!) wish i got the holiday! im a student nurse and dont get the hols rest of uni get so i have to go when its deserted and evry1 else is home partying!!

When i was in my first 2 years and living in uni accommodation they kicked us out at the end of each term, and if you wanted to stay they charged you b and b rates to do so. My parents lived abroad and this was really incovenient, also working in the holidays was much harder not being able to stay for a week or so and use the libraries. Once i moved into private for the following two years I loved it, and spent most of the holiday time still in Oxford working in the library, certainly couldn't go home for all the time, we had too much work to do. Most of my friends stayed around as well so it wasn't that lonely either.

I was at Worcester. Left in 2004 and am now at Birmingham doing a PhD.
  • Just thought I'd mention, we are now in talks with the BBC, and will hear from them tomorrow regarding the story.

I read your petition, and I must say I do agree you are being asked to pay a lot. What sort of accommodation do you get for this money?
There are some regulations regarding the "resale of electricity" concerning how much can be charged, not sure if this would apply in this type of accommodation. And £5 per week for internet is a real rip-off. My daughter has 2meg in her flat for £20 per month, and then the cost is reduced as they share it.
So her lodger is paying about £4000 per year all in,plus food of course, and that is for excellent accommodation in a prime area of Glasgow.
  • I've signed the petition.

I lived in halls twice and the private one tried to sting you at every opportunity, though paying for the full year seems most unreasonable, especially considering the high rent you are already paying.

From my experience halls often give students the opportunity to stay for the summer and the like and charged them accordingly - something many foreign students do - but it was never compulsary.

If I were you I'd get the NUS involved , get the student press and possibly the local press to run a story and get your local MP involved.
