Longer Commute - Lower House Prices

Reading this thread I've never felt so lucky to have my seven minute walk from my front door to my workplace.
My regional managers wonder why I just smile and shake my head when other offers are made to me!
Funny thing is that I once lived 5 minutes from work and didn't like it. I felt that if anything went wrong in the office at any time i.e like servers needed rebooting - I would be phoned up and asked to do it. So since then I've always made sure I'm 30 minutes away.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

lostinrates wrote: »Interesting noone has factored in health/mobilty with commute. It CAN take 1.5 hours commute each way in London (refering to the 3 hr daily commute questioned above) even in relatively quiet times if you are a slower walker/old/less mobile etc. Which of course might also impact on a choice of commute or staying within a town. Even then, if you are restricted, choosing a good location to be near transport is surprisingly easy to overlook.
Exactly, my 90 minute commute was door to door (Chelmsford to the lovely Stockwell). Far nicer to ride a bike now or just have a 20 minute tube journey to go anywhere socially in central London. You couldn't pay me to work in the city!
I guess my views on living in London may change if I ever decide to have kids which is pretty unlikely! Each to their own isn't it!

I suppose its where you are bought up but i might have liked it when i was younger, living in a city, but to be honest i wouldnt want to live in the middle of a city, and im not been funny but from outsider, i hate london.
It happens everywhere but just all the muggings on the tubes from gangs and all the stabbings on buses, which feature on crimewatch every month, would put me well off the idea of living anywhere near the place, the worse thing about it, its not ideal for people with cars so you are forced to use public transport.
take a look at this over 160 muggings a day in our capital.

If i was you i would move away from london and try and get a job out of london aswell.
The last thing i would want every night after finishing work is thinking of travelling for upto a hour and a half.
Id hate finshing work and has soon has you come out of work you become a target for criminals, you can keep that and you can keep the capital.I am not a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as not being a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. I've said this before, but it's good that we're all different. I wouldn't even want to entertain the idea of not living in a big city centre: suburbs make me want to cry blood, the countryside is great for around 30 minutes but then I get a bit bored and the thought of living in a standard, British town fills me with dread.
But as I said, good job we're all different. Otherwise places would either be very crowded or entirely empty.confused31 wrote: »Id hate finshing work and has soon has you come out of work you become a target for criminals, you can keep that and you can keep the capital.
That's a bit far fetched isn't it?0 -

Presumably that's after you've checked that they've turned them on and off again?
Actually, isn't 'rebooting' and IT term for 'turning it off and on again'?0 -

not really if there are over 43000 muggings a year in london, the odds of someone who works in london has got a good chance of becoming a victim of a mugging.
I personally wouldnt put myself in that position, but thats my personal opinion, i dont live out in the country, i live in a standard semi with a decent garden and parking, and if i want to get anywhere i just jump in my car and go.
I personally hate public transport, id prefer to drive myself for a hour to get to and from, work than get on a bus and a train to get to work and home again.I am not a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as not being a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. There are about 10 million people in London so off course there will be more crime and more congestion in proportion.confused31 wrote: »I suppose its where you are bought up but i might have liked it when i was younger, living in a city, but to be honest i wouldnt want to live in the middle of a city, and im not been funny but from outsider, i hate london.

Travel into the centre of any city or large town between 8-9.30am and 5-6.30pm and off course it would be busy.
And depending where you live in London, where you are going and the time of day you can use your car. It's actually cheaper and easier on most occasions to use public transport.confused31 wrote: »If i was you i would move away from london and try and get a job out of london aswell.

Most of my work has been outside London and I tend to travel against traffic and people. However as there is still a problem of congestion in the smaller towns I've worked in I still go to work early and leave early if possible to avoid it.
Rubbish.confused31 wrote: »Id hate finshing work and has soon has you come out of work you become a target for criminals, you can keep that and you can keep the capital.
Never had a problem on public transport and I've travelled at various times of the day and night.
In fact I've been threatened and seen more women threatened in their cars.
For some reason some male drivers in this country seem to think that if a woman is alone in a car and does something they don't like, which includes that male driver themselves blocking a road by parking on zig-zags or double yellows, it's a license to shout and threaten her unless another person witnesses it.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Statistically if you are a young man or a school child.confused31 wrote: »not really if there are over 43000 muggings a year in london, the odds of someone who works in london has got a good chance of becoming a victim of a mugging.
All the women I know and have known, apart from rich Arabs who have had their handbags taken, have had them taken when they have put them down on the floor, a seat or have been edistrat when they've attached them to a pram.
And this isn't all in London.confused31 wrote: »I personally wouldnt put myself in that position, but thats my personal opinion, i dont live out in the country, i live in a standard semi with a decent garden and parking, and if i want to get anywhere i just jump in my car and go.

I like reading. You can't read when you drive.
Ok I've seen one or two drivers do it and they weren't in traffic jams.
I also make sure I travel when I can get seats.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

it would be cheaper for me to use public transport, but i choose not to, ive worked in cities and i just dont like it, i hope you never become a statistic of crime, most people dont but it only takes that one time.
And you have also got the risk of terrorist attacks, whch have happend, you might be the lucky one, but you have more chance of becoming a victim of crime living and working in London, that reason alone i wouldnt entertain the idea.
I know its a lot bigger, and there would be more crime, but when you get whats called the steamers on the tube, working there way from top to bottom on the tubes and buses robbing people, you can keep it.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3618618.stm
and dont say you have never seen its rife
And then you have got the gangs and the stabbings, it happens all over the country but yet again, it happens a lot more in london, who would want to send their kids to schools, where a lot the kids are in gangs and carry knives?
London becoming known has knife capital of the world!!!!!!

Thanks to all for replies. Interesting reading. Even though I used London as an example in my own case I would be comparing buying a property in Nottingham to somewhere out of town so the commuting would be by car and not train. Still some very valid points raised which have given me plenty of food for thought!0
