Based on what you say I'll go ahead with opening the e-saver account.

I applied to open an e-saver account yesterday and received an email saying I would still have to go into the branch to show my ID documents.

    Booo!

Yeah, I think they might have changed the whole system now, the application form for the Monthly Savings account now also says you need a current account in order to open it online.

I would suspect that the other loophole of opening an e-saver in order to see the details of your Monthly Saver online would still work though. Mine were automatically tied together online but if they didn't then you should be able to phone up and get them to do that. If you have to go into a branch anyway it is a lot of hassle, so only worth trying if you really want to be able to check your balance online!

They're just trying to sell you a current account, I opened a monthly saver and an ISA and have access to my accounts via the e saver reward account.

yorkslad79, based on what wombler has just posted, can you confirm whether it was recently that you managed to link the accounts or as wombler points out is it a loop hole that may now been closed.

got online access last night to my web saver and can confirm it has automatically tied the reg saver details and the web saver details on my online banking so can see both, so it looks like you can still access both on line, so the loop hole has not been closed (yet)

My original post mentioned two possible loopholes - the one to open a Monthly Saver online by opening a Web Saver first seems to have been closed due to the new online application process requiring a current account. However the other to link the accounts and see your Monthly Savings balance online may well still work - but it's quite a bit of hassle just for that.

I'm in the process of trying this out and I'm not sure that it is closed.

I was able to take the first step of opening an e-savings account, without having a Barclays current account (I was asked if I had one and said no). I think I got some questions from Equifax about a credit card I have with an unconnected provider (fairly sure it was them and not the ISA I opened elsewhere the same evening) which I imagine may replace the need for in-store identity checks, if they're able to verify you that way.

So, this might still be the simplest way to go. Will keep you posted.

How did you get online access? My letter tells me nothing about that, and the only links on the website seem to be for opening new accounts.

I've tried the live chat but 'Wayne K' didn't know what he was doing, started telling me I had to have a Barclays current a/c, then said I had to have an a/c with any other bank, then went back to saying I had to have a Barclays current a/c. Despite me telling him had the letter with a/c no, he kept trying to tell me he'd help me to open one. Not sure what the K stand for, but I'm in some doubt the W stands for Wayne....

Hi Biggles - if you read my original post from a couple of months ago it has a (possible) loophole on how to get online access by opening a Barclays e-savings account. When that's open you will have online access and your Monthly Savings account should automatically get tied in to the same account so you'll be able to manage it online.

Nobody's reading what I say today, it must be me! ;-)

Yes, I have opened the eSaver, and my post was asking anna42hmr how she(?) got access to her eSaver. I have my letter with sort code/account number but there is no reference to online access, just like anna42hmr had.

I did read what you said - you never mentioned that you were talking about the e-saver, so I assumed that you were asking how to get online access to your Monthly Saver, that being the original thread topic and all...

You'll have to wait until you get your online banking code and pin number etc (can't remember exactly) before you can access it online - I had to phone up to get them to send mine since they didn't send them at first!
