Barclays Monthly Saver

I've been lurking around for a while & picked up some great tips here (thanks).
Thinking I might give some of my money to those nice people at Barclays today (!) I was a bit taken aback with the "have you got an appointment?", "Oh I'm sorry I may be free this afternoon sometime".... So I resorted to a look on here
Thanks to this I've opened (I hope) an e-saver account in less time than the conversation in branch & will hope then to get the monthly saver one on the back of it. Watching the thread & will post anything interesting.
Cheers - Herby0 -
Did you have to do anything special to tie the accounts together, Jimbow? Or did they set that up automatically?
anna42hmr - i'm not sure how long it took to open the online savings account, maybe a couple of weeks. Bear in mind it's the "e-savings reward" account that allows online access without a current account.
Herbalist - you don't need an account with Barclays already to get the 6% monthly saver. The hoops me and a few others have been jumping through are just so we can check our balances online! They seem to prefer branch access only for those without a current account.0 -

Thank you.
You can fund it from outside accounts, yes. I have a standing order from my A&L account.
Good to see the e-saver loophole to avoid going to a branch definitely works - shame Martin hasn't mentioned that in his newsletter.0 -
i applied for one of these on monday (maybe sunday) online. I have a student account with barclays. I received an email that my application is being processed and that i will be hearing from them shortly.
How long does this normally take?
thanksBarclays: 3900/4200
NatWest: 2350/2800

Can anyone confirm that opening an e-savings account will give online access to the monthly saver?
I spoke to a Barclays agent today and they told me the accounts would not be linked and the online access would be restricted to the e-savings account. They said the only way to get online access to your regular savings account is to open a current account and it could then be linked.
Online chat transcript:-
John N: Hi Darren, how are you?
Darren: Fine, can I give you some background information?
John N: What information are you looking for?
Darren: Yesterday I opened in branch a Monthly Savings account. I asked about servicing the account online and was told this could only be done if I had a current account. Later I found out that opening a e-savings account would also give me online facilities. I therefore opened an e-savings account online. I have now received an e-mail saying I will receive documents in the post and have to present ID in branch. I did this yesterday for the regular savers account. Do I have to do it again or can the two accounts be linked?
John N: Darren, with the e-savings Reward account, you will be able to get online facility. However, you will be able to manage only the e-savings Reward account online. In order to manage all the accounts online, you need to have a Barclays current account.
Darren: OK, that is bad news. I only needed the e-savings account for the purpose I mentioned above. Do I just ignore the forms sent to me when they arrive?
John N: Yes, you can just ignore the details that you will receive.
John N: We have current account with and without monthly fees. If you wish, I can give you the details accordingly.
Darren: I already have a current account.
John N: Sorry, do you have a current account with Barclays?
Darren: It is not with Barclays
John N: Darren, the Monthly Savings account can be accessed in a branch, over the phone and online. Online and telephone access is only available to Barclays current account holders who are registered for Online Banking and Telephone Banking.
John N: If you are interested to open a current account with Barclays, you can register for Online Banking.
John N: In our accounts, paying salary is not mandatory.
Is this true or are they just trying to sell me a current account.
I hate the fact I can only service my regular saver in branch, it's so last century!!!!0 -
They're just trying to sell you a current account, I opened a monthly saver and an ISA and have access to my accounts via the e saver reward account.0

Based on what you say I'll go ahead with opening the e-saver account.0
