virgin say i owe them money

Hi all sorry if this is in the wrong section. I decided to switch from talk talk to virgin as they keep sending me letters asking me to switch so i rang them only to be told i had an outstanding account with them from 2 and a half yrs ago when they were ntl they transferd me to credit department as i was gonna pay only to be told it was £377 i was mortified i asked what this was for and if i could have a bill the bloke told me couldnt do this as was to old and he didnt know how the bill had come about. I have never had a bill from them and i persumed when i switched from ntl to bt my account was cleared. Where do i stand with this i dont think i owe the money if i did i would happily make an arrangement to pay. Hope someone can offer me a bit of advice ref this and again im sorry if posted in wrong thread

Any organisation is required to keep financial records for 7 years therefore they should be able to provide you with a copy of the bill they claim you owe them for. If they can not produce it you should request the expunge the debt on the basis that they acn not provide any information supporting the fact that you owe them money.

You'll probably find it's made up of a final bill and then large charges :) However they should certainly be able to provide you with a full breakdown so that you can verify if firstly the amount was owed in the first place and also to give you the oppertunerty to defend if say they didn't send the bill etc (which it sounds likely that they didn't :) ).

While they're trying to sort out their own records I would dig out your own statements to see what you paid ntl and when. Seems like an enormous amount for them to claim after 2.5 years, normally they would have passed it to a debt collection agency after all that time if they couldn't collect it themselves. Presumably you are still in the same property as when you had the ntl account?
How much were you paying them a month at that time?

The obvious thing that springs to mind given the amount, is if any equipment was not returned - iirc NTL/Virgin charge something like £150-200 if a STB isn't returned at the end of a contract.
