Wages, child benefit and tax credits included me, DH and DS survive on very very slightly (a few hundred) more than the £17K you have for two.
Check out the OS board for being a bit more frugal/thrifty and check out the DFW board if you have debts.
Also good luck with trying for the benefits which the other posters mentioned.
(PS Being frugal can be fun if you make a it a challenge and still have the odd treat!).

Good tips here OP....please take a good look at your outgoings, and if you post a statement of affairs (SOA) over on debt free forum you will get loads of help in cutting down your expenses (where possible)

I also live on barely more than this and we are a family of 4!!

I agree with many other posters here-I am bringing up two children with a total income of just over £12,000 in one of the dearest parts of the country to live and with a mortgage to pay. It's not easy and we don't have holidays/new clothes etc but it is possible. You have to prioritise, set budgets and stick to it-boring but it does work.
I understand your frustration but not everyone is doing as well out of 'the system' as you seem to think-I worked full time in the NHS for almost 30 years prior to this last year and have also been shocked on how little help I could get the one time I needed help. However I am grateful for what I do get and have to 'make it work' until I can get my op sorted and get back to work. I hope you feel more positive soon, all the best to you.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
  • its not a case of how little help i get its the fact that i get none at all when there are those (and i know a few) who fiddle the system and live off it very comfortably and have never worked.

i need a car to get around as i cant walk properly or carry items which costs alot despite me doing everything i can to reduce it , my partner needs a car daily for work reasons so car sharing isnt viable.
we dont get a reduced council tax or any form of help at all with the rent (390pcm doesnt sound much but seeing as she has to cover everything itsa huge chunk of her wages)

im locked into contracts which i cant afford to pay like mobile phone, internet, bt landline, car insurance, a credit card which im trying to clear,
then there is gas, electric, water

ive even been refused a crisis loan to try to help with things.

im always being told that i cant have X help as im not in recipt of beinifits as its credit only. no training courses nothing. i dont expect to be given cash on a plate but i do expect to be treated the same as everyone else,
as i left work to try to progress in a carrer in engineering and having to pay my own way what little savings i managed to get when working on 3,20 an hour to cover my uni fees and living costs plus a massive student loan hanging over my head im actualy due to that not entiteld to help. i know im sounding agreessive but its frustration wioth the situation not with those around me
, ive got an op on friday whioch probably wont help me with my physical issues but its a last chance situation and i know its a minimum of 3 months recovery time untill ill be able to leave the flat let alone try to get work.

so much for new labours much vaunted new deal system, courses for all and all that other rubish. i do swear if i was an illegal imigrant i would be entitled to much more help.

as to help though the job centre. i get refused help from them, and also from outside orginisations. as im only IB credit based. whcih is an evern greater kick as i realy do need the help.

Try fiddling the system and then you can as comfortably as they do then

You've been given lots of very good advice on this thread. It would make better sense to accept your situation and follow the suggestions given, rather than compare yourself to what others may or may not have.
Here I go again on my own....

It seems you are so locked in a cycle of self pity and jealousy that you are unable to accept you can manage.

The grass is rarely, if ever, greener on the other side so stop mithering about others and get on with your own life.

Seriously, you are not helping yourself!

Is your OH as negative as you? If not, then I feel for her as I've lived with someone like yourself and it really gets you down after a while!

You say the jobcentre are useless well tell me have you seen a DEA? yes or no. A regular JC+ advisor is no good to you.

  • can you not get incapacity benefit?
Please try to feel more positive,If you need a car to get around you must be entitled to DLA.
This would make a huge difference to your income.
I know it must be disheartening as you cannot contribute to the household finances,I do hope there is light at the end of the tunnel following your op.

    .
    It's Employment Support Allowance now!
  • You may well be frustrated but why don't you follow the good advice of the op's - there is some very good advice there! - And stop wallowing in self pity as it will get you no where. I am currently surviving on little more than 13K a year after tax (that includes any tax credit and child benefit) with myself, partner and 6 month old - yes it is a temporary situation and only for another 6 months but it can be done. 17K after tax is a few hundred over the 13K mark and my rent is £400 so its very similar financially to you but with a baby to feed, clothe and ofcourse nappies so it is possible.

And that is now in two parts for incapacity. Contribution based (what was IB)and income based (what was income support for incapacity). Will not get income based as they have partner earning £17K year and as they have not worked or paid NI for the last few tax years they will not get contribution based.
