Help! - laptop for Uni Student

I've bought 2 Acer laptops from laptopsdirect.co.uk (dropped the first one and it was written off by the insurance company who sent me a cheque). I spent about £350 on each one, and they're fine for doing coursework and surfing. I've also managed to get them running Virtual PCs for anything coursework related. I have found the hard drives a bit small on the models I've bought (less than 100GB on each one).
Also - don't buy Microsoft Office with the laptop as it's about £100, and students can buy the ultimate version (retails for around £500) straight from Microsoft for £39 at https://www.ultimatesteal.co.uk - the only issue I had was trying to get it activated on the replacement laptop, explaining to the guy on the activation line that you bought it from "The Ultimate Steal Website":rolleyes:0 -
I'd recommend the Philips X200 AT JUST 455 at lavacomp0

Hate to say this but check out the dreaded Tesco Direct in their clearence lines! just got Acer with dual core, 4gb ram, 250gb hard drive, ATI graphics card, 15.6 inch screen with webcam and wireless etc etc £379.00.
Sorry to use the bad 5 letter word (Tesco):rolleyes:Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0 -
I suggest the refurbished laptop. The obvious advantage is to save a lot of money. And also in general the refurbished laptop is even better than a new one. That is because the refurbished one need to pass even stricter detection after it is fixed when it returns to the company. But it has some risk to buy a refurbished one, take care to buy.
Good Luck...

:TYou could be chasing your tail forever as there are a plethora of deals around at the momment.
Might I suggest you check out the Tesco Direct website ( you can also use codes for additional clubcard points & quidco available too!). They have some reductions at the moment.
I just got an Acer Aspire 6530G T5800 - AMD quad, 16" Full HD Screen, Blu-Ray player, 4 gig Ram, Full Dolby Cinema 5.1 for £404-00 delivered next day. Cashback through quidci was c. £10+ - already payed. Catalogue No: 204-3272. Office 2007 Software package on-board 60 day trial - use Software4Students for full suite at mega discount price for students or contact the IT dept at Uni. Some Uni's have agreements with Microsoft to provide students with software FOC!
Same is £599-00 on Amazon!
If your a Tesco Credit Card holder you can get 6 x months interest free credit to ease the pain!0 -
Ooh, you got my hopes up there. That tesco direct spec looked almost exactly what I was after at a good price, but there don't seem to be any on the Tesco site any more0

My son has just got an Acer Aspire for free as a deal on his new phone. His contract came to an end, where he was paying £30.00 for not such a good deal, he went to another company via quidco got a deal for £30.00 per month with 600 mins and unlimited texts and a free laptop. The contract is for 18 months but he got a new Sony Ericcsson and not bothered by being tied for 18 Months- might be an option?0

Search ictsales.co.uk in google for cheap, 2nd hand laptops etc
There's also a laptop for £299 which has pretty good specification and has good support by Dell (because they are business laptops). They are Vostro laptops, simply go on to the Dell website and go to the laptop section.0 -
Personally think ebay is your best best you can buy a brand new with warranty usually 30% cheaper than in shops0

My daughter went to uni last year and she found it cheaper to buy a laptop which was directed at children and a notebook which added up to others she was looking at ie Dell. Seems the 'children's computer' she wanted did everything needed - she got it from PC World (don't knowif the VAT may be been different).
As I understand it from my daughter who has an NUS Extra card (yes it is worth paying the extra) and PC World are not giving a student discount. Another thread of this subject did say some PCW's do and some don't - might be worth trying in a town where there is no uni!!Regards
LindyLou :hello:
