My son started Uni in Sept, he's been borrowing his girlfriends laptop for his assignments but really needs one of his own. He's not a gamer and is doing a History degree and needs one just for that and surfing the net. Anyone able too offer advice on what would be suitable bearing in mind my pennies are in short supply? I have no idea about spec or prices? He's quite happy too have a 2nd hand or refurbished but we don't want to be fleeced!!!!

If you have a Aldi near you, they're worth checking. I got my laptop from there about 1 year and a 1/2 ago for about £500 on special offer. I'm sure someone else can suggest how you could get it cheaper but that's what I did.

lap tops are much mroe expesnive that desktops on a same spec basis, i could have got a desktop for 200 but had to pay 400 for a laptop i could use for ANY gaming at all
if he realy doesnt want any form of gaming then go into staples and ask them about there useable returns yould get a reasonable spec work laptop for around £200 but it will NOT run any games as it wont have any graphics card. also ignore what they say in store as tbh they dont know a thing about PC's i was garunteed that the one i got from them would run games with hardware accelerated graphics which in relaity is barely enough to run the graphics portion of vista. hence a quick return and onto other places.
ask for ex diusplay ones as well as its cheeper0 -
Check out this site http://www.studentstore.co.uk/ check the list of universities to see if his is affiliated to this scheme. Not only are the laptops very cheap but they also give a you a 3 year warranty, worth its weight in gold, mine went back for a minor issue which they fixed on the warrenty. I asked about getting some additional memory and they fitted me some extra memory at the same time, and didn't charge for the labour, just the new memory at trade price!2009 wins: Cadburys Chocolate Pack x 6, Sally Hansen Hand cream, Ipod nano! mothers day meal at Toby Carvery! :j :j :j :j0

This seems to be an excellent price and will be more than adequate for those purposes:

Hi
I just bought a new laptop from Dell and it was £400 for what I needed (knock £60 off that for a webcam and a colour backing). I would advise getting biggest amount of RAM (I think that's it) on the processor you can, otherwise it slows down your internet, especially if downloading lots of journal articles for assignments (like I do)
May be worth looking if uni have cheap deals with Software companies - prob. cheaper than the manufacturer. I managed to get a more updated version of Photoshop for much cheaper this way. Also the ultimate steal does Office 2007 for £40 - saves maybe £30.
Afraid I can't offer any advice on second hand laptops or repaired ones.
Hope that helps0 -
pc world, sounds simple but check them out!
just had a quick look and there is a laptop for £250, Ei System (?) not quite sure who they are! but it does what you need to for essay writing and browsing the net.
however if your looking for student discount try dell as previously suggested, or apple have 10% student discount if you buy using a university computer.
as far as specs go, a 1.8Ghz 1DDR Ram, any sized hard drive (60-120Gb) should be more than adequate for work and facebook!0 -
Try check this company out. I ordered my own laptop there and it was perfect!

I thought if you have a UCAS card that you got a discount from PC World?
Mydd bought a laptop from PCW which was advertised as a child's laptop - why, we haven't worked out yet but it is fine - I am sure if you search on there you will find it.
Also student discount applies with UCAS card for Staples - if I am wrong on this will somebody correct me as dd is away and I am just doing this from memory.
PS Will post which one she bought when I next speak to her.Regards
