There have been radio items about the person who lived on £1 a day - I seem to recall that the £1 included her travel, entertainment and food......a very stringent aim. Yep, i have also seen a book written by her for sale on one of the charity websites. What was interesting to me was that it seems to have changed her overall perspective on life more generally to the point where my guess is that she probably maintains many elements of the lifestyle she discovered on ideological grounds. It sounded as though she began to see through commercialism and started to find the cheaper options she found for living as being more valid. I can imagine that given the shallowness of many of the things we all spend money on. However, I am not good at acting on it all too often! I think it would be good if there was a forum specifically on this topic.....would this get round the links to a blog problem, and could it be actioned by the forum organisers, I wonder?

I try to keep myself to £5 a day and hardly ever manage that. I'll be very interested to see how you do and look forward to trying some of your ideas. Good luck!

I've just read the rules on your website and it's going to be even harder than I thought. It seems you aren't going to let yourself buy anything in bulk because that would take you over your £1 limit. I think you will need to revise this...

Hi Lee this sounds like it will be really interesting. I will follow this thread . incidentally there is a thread HERE where someone attempts to stick to 50p a day for a year, there is a wealth of information and recipes ensuring all the government recomendations are reached eg. 5 a day - good luck

Oh lordy no ! It'll be averaged on a daily basis, bulk buying is allowed I think I need to clarify that lol.

Well my parents can cook a meal for 4 inc pudding for £1 and get good sized portions so its possible, of course it means living on things like Tesco Value stuff and hunting for bargains but when I say a meal I mean things like stews, casseroles, mince and tatties etc.

I went the reverse way nowadays due to depression, when I was 17 I lived on about £15 a week if not less than that(and that was living off stuff like pizzas and wagon wheels) these days I keep buying take aways due to stress/self esteem hunger and buy junk up town.

Its a good idea, and could be a fun challenge

My only criticism is that if you do it you cant invest alot of extra time into doing this or its a false economy. If you spend an extra hour a day looking for deals, picking fruit, hunting out free reception food you may as well go work for an hour, even on minimum wage your hours investment will return you a fiver after tax which is alot more food than you could scavange.

I think he will probably be doing his deal hunting when he isn't able to work lol

The book is called 'How I Lived a Year on Just a Pound a Day' by Kath Kelly.

I would like to recommend cooking a Prawn Curry, as you can buy prawns cheap. Do a big Prawn Curry, and freeze half of it
