    It could be a waste of yours, as I'm working blind - the theory (which could be wrong), is that your camera will use the built in XP usb mass storage driver, for that to work, you need the correct contents in c:\windows\inf\usbstor.inf - (it could have been overwritten with an old W2k/98 version)

    You need to copy that inf file you downloaded from the net to c:\windows\inf\usbstor.inf, and plug your camera in to see if it works.

    Your PC hasn't had it, this is all a software problem, and software can be reinstalled. Ultimately, backing up your data, and reinstalling XP will solve all your problems

    The first 3 lines should be as follows

    [Version]
    Signature="$CHICAGO$"
    Class=USB

    (there is a bit missing from your post)

    so, find the one you downloaded, right click, copy, then go to c:\windows\inf and paste

    if that doesn't work, right click the one you downloaded, and click install

    ok tell you what i have so far

    i downloaded that file you told me too,saved it to my documents.

    opened that up and copy'd it.
    then went to run and put in what you told me too but it came up with cannot acsess it !!

    so i cannot even get to the point to paste information on to the file.

    if i took pc into a repair shop how much do you think it would cost??

    i havent a clue what im doing here

    also you said easiert thing to do would be to back everything up and reinstall xp.

    how would i do that
    how do i back up??

    thanks for your help,you are very patient x

  • Save the one you downloaded to the root of c: eg c:\

    Click start
    then run

    cmd

    Click OK

    in the black box that comes up, type
    copy c:\usbstor.inf c:\windows\inf (there is a space between y and c:, and f and c:)

    if that doesn't work, check the file is there ie c:\usbstor.inf

    if it is, login as administrator, and repeat the process above.

    If you went to a shop, they would probably reinstall xp, and charge you maybe £60 upwards.

    What I'm suggesting is normally very straighforward, ie a 10 second process, the sticking point is that for some reason, you can't save anything to c:\windows\inf it seems. Do you have anyone who can help you?
