    HI,

So quick question for everyone, if you were getting married and you already had a flat with all the necessary bits in, what would you do about doing a gift list or asking money for a honeymoon?

    Thanks

I'm bridesmaid for my friend who is getting married in 2 weeks and she wants people to donate to her "honeymoon fund". They are not actually going on honeymoon until August - so it kinda feels like are just paying for their summer holiday! But I know she is on a tight budget (4k), and she has bought my dress, paying for hair+makeup and is paying for my room overnight at the hotel venue. So although she's said not expecting gifts & if people want to give, donation to honeymoon would be appreciated, I kind of feel obliged ......... and I have NO idea how much would be appropriate to give!

hi guys - what we have done is to make a list of all the extras and all the activities we will be doing while we are away. we are getting married abroad, just the 2 of us, and having the honeymoon at the same place. we have broken it down into sections, eg before we fly, wedding day and activities and then broken that down into small chunks and invited friends and family to chose something. we will then take a picture of what they have paid for and send it as a thank you card.
I might just add that we have friends and family who are more than happy to do this.
we have set it out like this
    Travel

Champagne for flight out - £35 (received so far £35)
    VIP lounge at Gatwick - 5 x £20 (received so far £100)
Hotel for night before travel - 4 x £45 (received so far £0)

    wedding day

luxury manicure with paraffin wax - 3 x £10 (received so far £0)
luxury pedicure with paraffin wax - 3 x £10 (received so far £0)
    Caribbean dove facial - 4 x £15 (received so far £0)
Touch by an angel massage - 4 x £15 (received so far £0)
Palm Island waves massage (for John, lol) - 4 x £15 (received so far £0)
    Champagne for wedding night - 2 x £20 (received so far £0)
    Pink/white flowers for hair and bouquet - 5 x £10 (received so far £0)
    1 tier wedding cake - 3 x £10 (received so far £0)
    decorated heart gazebo - 2 x £20 (received so far £0)

    Activities

trip to the botanical gardens whilst in St Vincent - £20 (received so far £0)
private tour guide for St Vincent - 3 x £50 (received so far £0)
    Champagne sunset cruise - 2 x £40 (received so far £0)
    Tobago Cays Sailing trip - 2 x £65 (received so far £0)
    Private beach picnic - 2 x £20 (received so far £0)
    Union Island private charter - 3 x £20 (received so far £0)

obviously, this is suitable to us - we are paying for the wedding and the trip so people dont feel they are contributing to us just going away - this way they really feel like they have contributed to our day.

  • I didn't have a wedding gift list when I got married a couple of years ago and I definitely wouldn't have expected anyone to contribute to my honeymoon. People who weren't invited to the wedding gave us gifts, so I made sure that I sent out wedding cake to everyone that had given us a present, as well as handwriting thank you letters to everyone who'd been kind enough to give us something. We'd been living together for 4 years before we got married, so had all we needed for the house.

I guess times have moved on and changed a bit....
  • hoq about a mystery holiday- guests donate towards a fund, but THEY choose where youy go! (only fair, right?)

you may need to limit choices / set a minimum standard- butlins just wouldnt cut it..
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

2 family members got married last year.

We asked both what they would like as a gift.

One asked for Mothercare vouchers and the other asked for Argos vouchers.

I can't see why people can't ask, otherwise they would only be wasting their own money if they got something the bride and groom didn't need.

We're getting married next year, we're not going to have a gift list (I think they are sooooooo cheeky but that's just my opinion), but if anyone asks, we will request money.

We would request vouchers (I was thinking Next) but the way companies and vouchers are recently, I don't like that idea anymore!
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • Crikey don't weddings bring the worst or best out of people. Way back in 1992 when we got married after living together for 6 years we asked for money or vouchers and had no problems. I hate 'it's traditional' why? It was my wedding so I did exactly what I wanted. Did not have a top table,no posed photos and wore a purple dress!!!! The other thing was a free bar because weddings are expensive events for the guests. They buy an outfit,a present, sometimes travel a long distance, stay in a hotel and are ripped off with expensive drinks at the bar!!!! Did our own catering, arranged the flowers and made the cake.
Anyway money at a wedding is the done thing in some cultures think of a jewish wedding when they pin money on the bride!!!
Do whatever you want and stuff tradition whatever that is. Queen Victoria only started the trend for a white dress.
