Really need to vent!

Sorry for venting here but it feels like home so i hope people dont mind, i just need to rant for a min.

I was talking to one of my neighbours yesterday, we have only spoken a couple of times before. She told me i was basically steeling from the government and her by claiming child benifit

We just started chatting while we were clearing the drive, she was telling me how broke they were and needed more benifits to be able to live properly. She doesnt work as she is disabled due to her back problems, we were shoveling snow !!!!!!.

I stayed pretty quiet for the most part while she rambled on. we pay £600 per month to a private landloard, she complained that she had to top up her housing benifit by £100 per month. she was smoking like a chimney, my OH 'treats' himself to 1 a day before the shower i make him have after as i cant stand the smell. I cook form scratch everyday using basic foods, they have takeaway delivered most nights. they have 2 nice cars, we sold ours to save money and take the bus instead.

She even told me that her partner couldnt live with her and the 3 children officially as they would loose too much money as he works full time. He oficially lives with his parents.

after going on about her situation she then asked me what benifits we get, i replied just the child benifit, we dont qualify for others. She told me that we might as well rob the government as we didnt need it and that it should be given to people like her who really need it. I honestly thought she was kidding, but no she went on to tell me that people like us were the reason her kids had to live in poverty. I wanted to tell her that people like us were the reason that there was benifit money in the pot in the first place.

I honestly wanted to scream at her. Does she not realise that it is her taking money from peole who really do need this money. i know me and OH are lucky to have good jobs, my debts will be gone and we will have our house deposit this year i hope. I was just so mad and ive woke up thinking about it this morning.

Sorry for such a long ramble, its about the only thing that has stopped me shopping her for benifit fraud. I think ill have to avoid her from now on. Thanks for listening if your still reading.

I think that is a pop at the benefits system, which we all know, in places, gets it completely wrong.

However, there is no "simple solution" - there are those who would have us go back to dickensian times and a return to the "haves and havenots" but surely in todays society...

Me and OH both work, see less of our children than we would like, and have significantly lesser disposable income than her non-working sister.

    Hi,

Yes I'm still reading and I have to agree with you in the main. Obviously I don't have a problem with people who genuinely need benefits. Whilst we are having a grumble, people like that are getting paid from tax payers money. My OH has just had to take a 10% pay cut to keep his job, and we have never claimed benefits of any kind. ( Except child allowance...25 years ago ).

Still as you say our debts will be over in th near future......Have a coffee and forget her. !!

Are you saying that she is defrauding HMRC by claiming that her partner lives elsewhere when he lives with her and is working?

    If so:

and also the fact that if she can shovel snow, she's not got a back problem so is claiming disability benefit fraudulently. I agree with mrcow, report her, anonymously if you like.

I agree. It'll serve her right for being such a mean b**** ;)
  • Well done OP for keeping your cool whilst talking to her! It sounds like she is playing the system in more ways than one and then has the cheek to whinge that she's not getting enough! People like this are total scum and should be reported immediately.

My own sister is childless & moans about me getting child benefit. That was until I found out her hubby got tax allowance for being married (this was some time ago), & that she had yet to repay her student loan.
I take every opportunity to bring up the subject now & enjoy her sqirming, he-he.
