We are always going to be fiscally worse off than the two incomes, one household lot but given the misery of most marriages we gain in other, more important, ways:j

When I was a single gal it was hand to mouth for 6 years. I am grateful for the small mercies. Double income household and a lovely husband.

    Extreme saving = extreme personality.
Read the Mr Mean (Mr Men) for a quick snapshot of your life.
If you live to 80, and sleep 8 hours per day (a lot more when old and an infant), you will have 467200 hours on Earth.

On my 467199th hour I want to look back to a full life. Life is merely a collection of experiences, and eating a cold potato for dinner doesn't cut it for me.

We've all taken a 20% pay cut where I work.

Is that why !!!!!! left the forums? For 12 months he always made out people taking pay cuts was very far-fetched. Seems to now be happening more and more now.

do you not have any student loans or pay council tax, water bill, rent, water bill. probably u are staying with parents. once you move out your bills will rise for utilities and also probably for travel / fuel bills. but you seem to be doing well with being frugal, wish i could be like that
Council tax, water rates and rent comes out as a one-er, at 500 PCM.
You never go to the dentist, yuk!
I do go to the dentist. My wife is registered with the NHS.
    Presents (birthday, christmas etc)...... 0

Life must be bundle of laughs in your house at Christmas.
Complete trot. Consumerism is a sickness in my mind, a weak trait in individual personalities. Having been to some of the most medieval countries on this planet, you get to appreciate what is important in life. And its not buying/receiving loads of presents. Its appreciating what you have got, who you have around you. Its really sad that people associate spending more money than they have as living.

Try seeing a family destroyed by war and you wake up pretty damn quickly into realizing what really is important in life. I will give you a clue. Its not the latest BMW or mobile phone. Having watched a father grieve his dying daughter in the back of an aircraft hammers that home.
If so, you are in for a big shock once you get out into the real world You will at some point in the future be forced to leave the military. Paying £200pm keep to the military for your quarters/food/council tax will increase considerably. (I'm sure you realise this hence your savings)
Current trade is 40% undermanned. Even if I eave at my leave point, I will be going into a job that pays me twice what I am currently on for my experience gained in the Military. Its slightly more than 200 quid mind. Everyone currently can get extended to 55 if they so choose; most cant stick any more than 16 years and leave with a pension at 38 and move into civvvie street on a hugely expanded salary. Most firms have one or two directors that are ex-mil; that is no coincidence. They love the attitude and the experience that those personas bring.
I notice you have no children either? Again, when you loss your wifes income due to children, then have a mortgage to pay, council tax to pay and all the other expenses a child will bring, things will change.
Well, thats simple. people shouldnt have children till they can afford them. I agree, they can just "happen", that could explain the odd one, but I find it surprising how many Vicki pollards there are with 20 chav kids in tow. If that isnt a lifestyle choice, then I dont know what is. My wife have decided to put off kids for a year or two. If it happens, it happens. But I see us making responsible decisions instead of going out and just doing what the hell we like. Vis a vis our expenditure. We enjoy the great outdoors and stuff that people drive past every single day on the way to work. If you want to see that as odd, thats up to you. I think the way most people live in this country as

    1) weak
    2) shows that they lack confidence, love and dont value themselves, otherwise they wouldnt have to buy tat to make themselves feel better.

Exteme money saving is the dietary equivalent of anorexia. You don't look any better for it and it makes your life miserable.

We are quite happy, but thank you for your concern!

When I find something I need, as opposed to being brainwashed into thinking I will need by the constant barrage of advertising, I will buy it.

Am I missing something? So what do you spend all the rest of the cash on?

I'm going in to patronising mode here, accept my apologies.

Life is a balance. Spending oodles of cash at Christmas is stupid. Never buying anyone a present is just as stupid. A good friend or family member knows how to tread the line between rampant, pointless consumerism and when to buy someone a small or large gift. Sorry, but your post really irritated me. Honestly, if you see something that you know would bring a friend or family member real joy it doesn't matter if it's free or £100. Just get it for them and you will enrich both yours and their life. Try it, it's ace.

Oh wait, maybe I'm not the patronising one.
