I am only doing it for the short term, around 2 years to get a solid deposit.

This is an important point to put things in context - saving like mad for 2 years is fine as you are working towards a better end goal.

Once you have a big deposit and a smaller mortgage then you can plan your cashflows and afford to live more luxuriously.

a reli of mine lived uber frugally. he even cut oxo cubes up and got 8 drinks, yes, 8 ,out of 1 cube. lived in a council house. Dies and leaves a fortune, hes invested all spare cash in the stock market [ this is a few yrs ago] his estate divided [ after lots of IH tax] amongst his nephews and nieces, this is how i got to buy my house outright BTW. But we'd have rather hed lived. Still, in his own way hed done what he wanted, so, who is anyone to say what someone else should do with their money?

I agree with LittleMissAspie - We are always being lectured to cut down on our spending, cut out luxuries etc and yet here is someone doing it and getting flamed in the process.

Yes life is for living but if you want to get something bad enough, you will give up the little extras to obtain it. mbga9pgf, wants to have enough to buy a house/live when he comes out of the services and I for one, think he is being sensible.

What this thread has done has made me feel rather inadaquate as I cannot afford all these little extras that some are flaming mbga9pgf for not having, do I live less of a life? Well maybe but it is still fullfulling, Am I missing out on life ? Not sure, I get to spend time with my family. Will I regret it? My only regret is marrying someone who cares little for his children on our divorce, my sacrifice for my children is worth it.

For what it is worth mbga9pgf (blimey I wish I could shorten that!), I think you are being sensible and planning ahead...although treat yourself (cheaply if you wish!) from time to time to ease the boredom.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

OP you could still cut back. the reli i mention in the aboue thread had no fridge or freezer, no car,no phone, not even a land line,no computer, insisted on a B&W telly coz license cheaper than a colour one, and wore only second hand cloaths. never bought any new furniture, always stuff given by other relatives. Boy, did he know how to save money!
He bought a Sunday newspaper as a weekly treat, and read the FT in the library.

Thats a little bit too far for me! I dont buy papers though, get them either in the mess ( I pay a small subscription, damn, another outgoing :) ) or online.

Clothes wise, I am not too proud to admit I have bought in charity shops, although only top clobber, found quite a few hardly warn designer jeans g for buttons (the old gal didnt know what they were I dont think!) A brand new wetsuit and all our reading books come from oxfam. Got a pair of tailor made leather shoes that fit like a glove in Marlborough. New insoles, quids in! Weird thing is, our local community must have similar tastes in books as me, I generaly only have to look in one or two stores to find exactly wht I am looking for!

We downgraded and cancelled sky+ a year ago, tbh, the sky freeview you get on cancelling the contract fits the bill as we get Sky reception (bad area) at no cost, with all the freeview channels. COuldnt live without a freezer, we cook a lot of stuff, spag bol, sheperds pie, lasagne, indian, chinese, thai from scratch and freeze it for use when we cant be bothered or had a long day!

We are looking to get more furniture soon, at auction, not for cost but for quality. Most of the stuff in Next/M&S and such like is quite apalling in quality. Cant beat some of the older, waxed oak furniture you get in clearance sales.

AS you can tell, couldnt exist without a computer or internet, not just for on here, also do a lot of research for work using good old t'internet! Well better than a library!

hi mbga9pgf well done on your savings. I agree with a lot of things you have said in your posts and fantastic savings figure :-) but not possible for me to better them.

I am not entirely sure how accurately you are collecting your figures.
I tend to do all my spending via one account and one credit card. I download the data provided by the bank and card company on to microsoft money. This allows me to record my expenses and income down to a pence. Most banks and credit cards companies allow you to download the data in various formats.
Microsoft money allows you to run all kinds of reports i.e monthly spending, spending by categories etc . No affliation to microsoft just used to that software but here is a link to open source ones http://www.osalt.com/ .

Once you have got your expenses accurate to a pence you can give us your figures look forward to seeing them. And the best way to get the most accurate data is by the above method. I used to think I was uber frugal till I used the above method and was quiet surprised to find out how much I really spend.

You may have a better system to keep track of your expenses but this was a speculative though. Look forward to your comments
