200 miles on clock is it still classed as new?

  • I don't disagree but your missing the point.
Given that the OP has started this thread i'm assuming that is not a option so any comparison is therefore irrelevant.

I suggest you research your facts a little more before brandishing something nonsense.

People frequently drive new car's long distances on trade plates. Hence the OP's original question.

But of course they used to drive them with the odometer disconnected. That's before many got prosecuted for misrepresenting the mileages of new cars. ;)

THe definition of 'new' is easy as it is defined in law. It was established in an appeal case many years ago when some dealers were supplying cars that had been sat in fields for up to 2 years.

A car is new if it has never been 'previously supplied'. That is established by whether it has a previous owner. A pre-registered car will have been registered to the dealer on the V5, who counts as an owner. So technically that car is not new. As the first user is the second owner, this should be reflected in the price.

& there still remains, unfortunatly, the recalibration facility, that dealers & some people, with a bit of IT knoledge & a smaller bit of software, are able to carry out!!

Like I said earlier, look at the log book, if the dealers name is in there then it's preregistered or ex demo. Not a bad thing but it has one extra owners and should be cheaper.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Not much consolation if the dealer gets caught, though. When I was a TSO, what we did was get the motorway police to stop vehicles travelling on trade plates. They would do the routine checks, then establish if the odometer was disconnected. If so, they would pass on the statements to us.

The first thing we did was interview the delivery driver, who would always say that the car ad been given to him already disconnected. This gave us what we needed to prosecute the dealer for misrepresenting the mileage. By this time the vehicle would have been supplied and the purchasers were less than happy.

It was amazing how many miles some of these cars had done, as they could have been exchanged several times. One Audi I found had been from Essex to Scotland and back, via several other places and covered about 1200 miles.

You can alter the odometers but the paper trail history doesn't lie. It is also more common now for people to be jailed for clocking cars. Many authorities routinely take previous offenders straight to Crown Court for Trade Descriptions Act offences involving vehicle fraud.

We may have worked together :D I worked the M1 for 8 years and new vehicles with disconnected speedometers were two a penny, all info went to trading standards.

One that made the paper was a retired naval officer who bought a Jag in Plymouth, the car was sourced from a dealer and delivered from Edinburgh on trade plates with the speedo undone, and magically delivered to the chap with less than 10 miles on the clock :D Delivery driver was clocked well into three figures in the chap's pride and joy.

Sorry should have said it was a deserted dead straight motorway with absolutely nothing around, just like when people post about speeding tickets, always on roads totally deserted with nothing about and normally three in the morning  but that's another topic.

The law has changed since you left the service and the Trade Descriptions Act no longer exists. We now use the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regs and the Fraud Act along with Proceeds of Crime legislation action to recover the profit from the crime in appropriate circumstances. Same result at the end of the day.

If i was the salesman i would say i have this car available now but it has 200 miles on, the price is £10K or your can wait 10weeks and have the same car for the same price but with only a few miles on the clock. But incidently your part exchange is worth £5k now but in 10weeks it will only be worth £4750, what would you like to do MR/MRS customer??

I would go to another dealer that would sell a new one at £10K and still give £5K trade in - exactly the same scenario we had when we bought a Tigra last May. Went to four different dealers and got the deal we wanted in the end.
