I have been looking for a board that relates to Digital and Cable TV but cant see it so appologies if this is in the wrong section.
I have been looking at swiching to one package for my telephone, broadband and tv. I am currently with Tesco for my Homephone and Broadband and with Sky for my TV.
I am not in a cable area (which is infuriating and I can't understand why or even find out if anmd when we are likely to get it). Yet I am certain I noticed yesterday that Sky is parts of its services via Virgin Media or am I mistaken?
Everyone I speak to tells me Sky are the cheapest package bundle at the moment but I still would like to do my own research before I finally decide to switch. I would switch to Virgin Media but as they dont have cable in my area it seems pointless (yet it looks like they have a good deal for Phone and Broadband).
I am currently paying £67.99 (£14.99 Tesco Broadband + £21. Tesco Homephone incl linerental and calls + £32 Sky SKy+ & Multiroom) for all 3 with 3 separate contracts and 2 different suppliers so I know theres a big saving to be found!
Any advice please?
Thank you

You need to establish whether you can get the LLU Sky Broadband service from your local exchange. If you can then its more than likely that you will be able to save over your current contracts.
Tking Sky broaband Base and Talk costs £0/month
Sky broaband Mid and Talk costs £5/month
Sky broaband Max and Talk costs £10/month
To check go onto Samknows, enter your exchange details and check the LLU operator list for Sky/Easynet.

Regarding your Virgin Media Question its doubtful that VM would find it cost effective to extend their cable network further as by now any one who wants multichannel TV outside a cable area would by now have got Sky/Freeview or Freesat. VM carry Sky channels over cable, Sky carry VM channels over satellite. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks It showed a tick next to the LLU so obviously that means it is available.
However I tried to add Broadband and Telephone from Sky and their website told me:
Sorry, Sky Broadband is not currently available for the telephone number entered
Sky Broadband is available in your area, but it seems your phone line may have a service on it that's not compatible with broadband. Please call us on 08442 410 420 to complete your order.
We Are Sorry
An error has occurred
Unfortunately we are currently unable to provide you with our Sky Talk service, as it appears that your phone line may have a BT service on it thats incompatible with Sky Talk.
Its easy to resolve
All you need to do is contact BT on 0800 800 150, to identify which issue is preventing you from buying Sky Talk and have the service removed or amended.
But our Telephone line rental was transferred to Tesco and so was our Broadband so why are they saying we are with BT when we have nothing to do with them?
Thanks

The infrastructure is still BT, BT still own the wires from your home to the exchange.
You'll need to phone Sky and see what they say as they should now be able to take control from Tesco of your line. You can't have just Sky Talk (no Sky line rental) as your line rental is with Tesco.
This is the problems you encounter when you move line rental away from BT, hopefully in time it should get easier and easier to move from one to the other. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Thanks. How easy is it to move the line rental? Is there anywhere I can go through to check this is the best deal for me? Also are there any sites I can get cashback from for switching?
Thanks

You may find that BT will charge you for moving your line rental back to them, around £125 if I recall. They may waive this if you take a 12 month contract with them.
As the previous poster has said this is the problem of moving your line rental away from BT.
I doubt that any other ISP will take you on without you have a BT line, so the first thing to do would be to move back to them, you may lose your broadband while this is being sorted out though.
I'm not sure who runs Tesco broadband and phone services. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks.
Unsure if it has any relevance but have been looking at Tesco Homephone T & C and discovered that:
"Tesco home phone is a service which lets you subscribe for Line Rental and make Calls using a BT line and get one bill from us for both. If you do not get Line Rental from us, you will get a phone bill from us for the Calls you make using Tesco home phone but you will still get your BT phone bill for line rental and certain other call charges."
So I assume it is similar with Broadband .
Thanks

As you have a BT compatible line you should be able to move your broadband and phone line, calls etc without returning to BT.
Get a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC) from Tesco, and call SKY on 08442 410 709 as soon as possible to order Sky Broadband and Sky Talk with Sky Line Rental, as the code expire,s after 30 days.0 -

I had Sky TV and recently switched my phone line rental and broadband to them, from BT and Pipex respectively.
The line rental was the easiest part. I phoned Sky to order it. They asked if they had my permission to speak to BT on my behalf, cancel my account for me and sort it all out. I said yes. That was it.
I got a letter from BT saying 'Sky have told us they're taking over your line - let us know if this is incorrect, otherwise do nothing to go ahead'. Then letters from Sky and BT confirming the switch. Then a few weeks after switching, a final bill from BT which gave me a refund of £19.66 (since line rental is paid in advance not arrears).
Nothing to it.

Hi Sarah
How much have you saved (if you dont mind me asking)?? Would be interested in comparisons (pm me if you dont want to make it public)??
Thanks

No problem!
Mine will be £10 a month for line rental and £10 a month for Broadband Max (unlimited downloads - they also do packages with capped downloads for less). So £20 a month.
Before, I was paying Pipex £23.99 a month for unlimited downloads and BT £35 a quarter (£12 a month roughly). So in total I'm saving about 15 quid a month.
The line rental saving isn't much, but I liked the idea of just having one company to deal with. Plus they did me three months free line rental so it saved me a bit more.
The Sky Broadband is great! I was previously getting downloads at 120kbps and now it's 440! Which I think means my broadband speed has jumped up from 1Meg to 4Meg but someone more clued up on this stuff might correct me on that.0
