Instead of going into branch tomorrow, you could go to the Barlcays website, and go onto random sites on it, and wait for a pop up to appear. After a while, you will see a pop up window. Accept the invitation for a web chat with an advisor who can help you with a variety of things. Not sure if it works on weekends though, depending if the staff work though.

this is off the top of my head so bear with me:

ID: Passport (uk or foreign) - if uk only passport is required with no address verification needed.
Driving licence (photo card/older licences without) - (uk or foreign) - if uk only d/l is required with no address verification.
    Army ID card
Benefits letter - showing entitlement for the year (may result in only a cash card being offered)
EU ID card - would require address verification being provided.
    Bus pass -

Address verification: Utility bill - most accepted, ones that are not are: mobile phone bills and Rent agreements.
Driving licence - if non uk passport provided, then driving licence can be used as address verification.
National insurance letter - confirming NI number/date and address (only ones from DWP or jobcentre plus)
Benefit entitlement letter - confirming entitlement and dates.
    Bank statement/Credit card statement
    Motor insurance certificate

Their are others but like i said this is off the top of my head, also, all address verification letters to be within last 3 months. (exceptions like motor insurance cert.) If you have none of these, then still goto your local branch as a personal banker can phone their support line and get extra documents to go through, bring everything with you possible.

Been here for less than three months, right?

She can use address verification for her Canadian address in that case. If she has a Canadian ID card/driving license with an address on, that can be used for her address, and then just her passport for ID.

Unless she has a Canadian bank statement, which would also be fine for the address.

What are the extra countries covered under ONEDOC now? UK, France, Poland... and...?

Out of curiosity, why does a customer gets a cash card for a current account when showing a benefits letter in ID and not as proof of address? Does this relate to Cash Card Account?

I thought the original poster's girlfriend needs to provide current UK address, and not Canadian address. I don't get it...

we have an impatriot rule, we dont expect people new to the country (less then 3 months) to be able to provide proof of uk address so we will take their foreign address as address verification even though the address we are storing is the uk one.

benefits letter is not normally always accepted as proof of id, but if someone doesnt travel or drive then it may be all they have. They may only be able to have a cash card account, or if the id is fully accepted they can have a full account.

Ok, I get it now. Can't the credit reference agencies check overseas addresses. I saw their website, and they operate in a lot of countries. Surely they are connected, or something like that.

It's what's called reduced level ID - it's acceptable according to the FSA for opening a basic banking account under the "Universal Banking" commitment. However, as the background checks etc. carried out for benefits aren't as tight as those for issuing a UK driving licence, it's not considered "enough" to risk giving them a full bank account.

Various services are blocked on Cash Card accounts; a major one being international facilities.

Many immigrants will need to open a bank account as soon as they arrive for the purpose of receiving salary payments; as such it is unreasonable to expect them to gain proof of a UK address in such a short time. Thus, we will accept their last identifiable foreign address, as that still leaves us with an audit trail.
