There are that many broandband supplies out there now, I would be inclined to cancel them and go with someone else. When they want to know why you are leaving you can tell them its because of their daft email.

I'm still within my contract of 12 months so cannot leave!! boo hoo!!

I think that 'fair usage' is such a vague term to put in T&C's in mean we only have a home PC here!

I have never understood how ISPs get away with advertising an Unlimited service when they don't actually provide anything near to that.

I worked for an ISP for a couple of years and they once announced unlimited webspace for customers. Unlimited meant 15GB but they never told any customers that until one hit the limit and kicked up a fuss, rightfully so.

Why are they allowed to do it?

Sorry to post so many threads, i just keep reading new things!!

How do you find out how much you downloaded so far as I am sure I've downloaded more than 15GB?????

OMG I've just realised its gone peak hours so I better log off the PC quickly and let other people use the bandwith I have paid for!!! ;)

You could complain to the Advertising Standards Agency (or Authority - the ASA anyway) - just seen a Tiscali advert on the TV offering 'unlimited broadband for £14.99 a month'...

  • Hi
They did the same to me twice, sent me emails said I was downloading to much, "under the fair use policy", but I personally think it was because I kept sending them emails about my lack of speed, and totally unreliable service.
Anyway got my mac code and away I went.
Warning, if you get your mac code and move away, it doesn't mean that you have cancelled your broadband account according to Tiscali, I found this out the hard way.
My advice if you want to cancel,
    1. Get your mac code
    2. Get new isp,
    3. Get up and running with new isp
    4. Phone Tiscali and cancel.
Otherwise even though your not with them, they will still charge you

    Hope this helps

I use a simple counter downloaded for free, from Netinternals. At the start of each month it resets itself, all user configureable. I set my monthly download limit and you get a bar giving percentage etc. when I get home I'll find you the link, or PM me.
  • Wanadoo unilaterally changed their T&C's, limiting their download allowances last year. However this only succeeded in alerting us to the fact that we were being grossly overcharged for the service at £28 a month. Then they let us down when we lost our connection completely over the whole Christmas period. In January we found they had systemmatically lied to us about the problem so we cancelled our subscription. They then refused to give us our migration code and blocked our line for a month so we couldn't sign up to another ISP.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

First of all I sympathise with your problem of being signed up to Tiscali but it is little wonder that new users, who have not been for warned about the appalling service that they offer, do sign up to them, when they are given a recommendation on this very website stating, that they have no download limit!

Quote: from Martins Broadband for Newcomers webpage

Major player 1Mbps at £14.99/month with no download limit. Big player Tiscali* charges £14.99 a month for up to a 1MB speed unlimited broadband package.

I really do feel that this webpage should be updated ASAP, as Tiscali is probably the most complained about ISP in the country and has been for quite some time, and this recomendation can only have a negative effect on the MSE website!
