We already use the cheap Daisy washing powder as its only £2.99 a box

Curious as where you get yours from? As I have to get my from Tescos. About 2/3 months ago it was only £2.69 a box noticed last night it had gone up.

One of the nicer things about growing older is that you realise that many of the material things in life are not as important as you thought they were when you were younger. If you're got your health, a job and a roof over your head you're not so badly off. I'd hate to be a teenager now with all the fashions and tecnological gadgets out there in the shops, and the peer pressure always to have the latest model or you're not "cool" any more.
I'm quite happy walking around in my charity shop clothes and using my ten year old mobile phone. Kids can't believe that a model so ancient actually still does the only thing I need it to do - make phone calls in an emergency ! And any potential mugger is very unlikely to rob me for it. He'd end up being a laughing stock!

Hmm, very interesting posts. I didnt have many clothes growing up and used to get them for birthday and Christmas which I hated as I felt these were the things I was supposed to have anyway, and Mum and Dad didnt get clothes for Christmas! (I am 39). I've never bought my kids clothes for a present, but they have had them from other members of the family, which I dont mind and my kids like having clothes from them.

Ive never thought presents should have to be useful though, presents are presents, things you would otherwise not be able to have.

I've always provided the basics for the kids clothes wise, but Granny has usually given them PJ's or something like that for Xmas/Birthdays along with other little things (and she spoilt them rotten IMHO)

I think you reach the point when you've been flat broke for long enough that you'd rather have something useful as a present (especially something you've been hankering after and can't afford) than another nice but basically useless thingimyjig!!!

It my birthday next week, and I honestly don't need anything (apart from another old banger - but hopefully that's sorted).... but I've pleaded with DH and my middle DD (who I believe is in charge of the event!) not to buy me 'clutter' I've been banned from Bromley until after then, as there is a new shop opening that I'm not allowed to look in. I happen to know it's Lakeland ;) so that should be OK :rotfl:

    Regards

What size is the box??? I use Tesco Value or Sainsbury Basic - about £1.50 for a 3K box..now I actually measure the powder, a box lasts even longer, and I do loads of washing.

It is 3kg and is suppose to do 35 washes but it is colours. I use it on most my wash so not to fade it and use the sainburys value for my whites.

It's a good reason for not having a state-of-the-art, all-singing-all-dancing mobile phone. I have whatever one is being offered free of charge when I renew my contract; as long as I can use it to keep in touch with Mr LW when he's at work, that's all I want. (He rings me 2 or 3 times a day to check that I'm OK, you see).

I also get clothes from charity shops - I've had some really nice, unusual stuff, and my comfy sandals came from the charity shop also. They looked to be brand new, so I got a very good deal there.

You should be OK in Bromley this week - the new Lakeland was supposed to open on the 7th but it's been postponed until the 21st :D

It always makes me smile when I hear someone say "oh wow! That looks expensive" and I know full well it wasn't..I think I inherited my mothers disinclination to part with cash.

I have a lovely 2 seater velvet-ish sofa..big, warm, squishy...everyone loves it. £20 from a charity shop, immaculate. I've got a big hifi unit - looks posh, came out of a garage clearance when we moved in for free. Any new stuff is usually Argos cheapie self build.

If I buy anything, I have to run through my own internal "justification" system...do I need it, can I do it cheaper etc..drives the missus mad. I've got a top of the range Speedtouch wifi router..£15 from an internet surplus site.

It may be cheap living, but it doesn't look it..heh.. I'd quite like to dig out some local car boot sales and go to a few...I love finding odd little bits and peices.

I love a bargain.............don't know when I last bought something 'new'........house is furnished from local second hand shops,(amazing what you can do with a pot of paint) got a lovely set of copper bottomed saucepans with a stand from charity shop -£25 (I did hesitate - not used to spending more than £5...........lol
Even duvet covers and curtains..........they're good as new, sometimes brand new.
