HDUH and Katie we lived in n wales for 8 years. If you are serious about living and being accepted in n and w wales then you could do with being pretty fluent at speaking Welsh. That is if you want to have trade other than tourists and if you want to get on with the locals. I love where I live in s wales, my surroundings are beautiful and the people are lovely and so naturally friendly. Everyone talks to each other everywhere

Prynhawn da Kittie, Sut dych chi?

I'm trying my best ;) not an easy language to master. I was doing classes until easter. Gave up cos' I hoped I'd be busy moving! I was going to start again when we moved.

Where we were looking to move there seemed to be a huge English population, (around Newcastle Emlyn/Cardigan) most of the people we met were from England somewhere - think only one of the house sellers we met were actually Welsh!

I'm so depressed that I'm not moving now. I threw away loads of estate agents blurb, and various brochures/fliers that I picked up on our last two visits yesterday, as they'll all be out of date by the time we can move again, I think of all the hours I spent on the internet, collecting estate agents, checking stuff out, researching schools for DS and arranging visits to the 6th forms  I've sunk a good bit of money into two trips to check out areas, maps and stuff too.

    Regards

Its never those ones whom the extra taxes are supposed to hit who feel the brunt Im afraid. Its the joe blogs like you and I - middle/low earners who keep the country afloat with the jobs that we do that pay so little - public service workers usually or those of us in the service industry

I've just read Nickled and Dimed *(which I got for 50p in the charity shop LOL) and that is exactly the point that she makes at the end of it - that "the 'working poor' as they are approvingly termed, are in fact the major philanthropists of our society.....To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a namless benefactor to everyone else'

On the subject of teeth, I lost a bridge of 3 teeth last year the NHS will only offer full dentures & I'm not keen on having all my teeth out, privately the cost will be between £15,000 & £28000, so I have remained gappy & I hate it.

    OMG:eek:

I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

How things have changed. My dad's family were from Ffestiniog and Mold and only learnt Welsh after they retired. I have noted doing genealogy that the family were bilingual in the 1870's , some were sole welsh speakers. On Big Brother last year they had a welsh lad from Ffestiniog and he said he thinks in Welsh! I think that it is lovely to revive heritage, but as Wales is a small country they must be careful not to go back to the mid 1800 and isolate themselves. I only know a few choice Welsh words! cau dy geg!

Hi Toothsmith, I have a couple of crowns & another bridge that I have no problems with, but I was given the usual line of 'well at your age' & told that they all need to come out as there are better ways of doing them now, which translates into 'they want to make money out of me!

How old are you? (If you don't mind me asking!)

If gum problems have set in as well, then taking stuff out is probably justified, but if the teeth are firm, then I'd look for another opinion.

I'm just about to do a 6 unit bridge for an 80+ yr old. Implants would be totally inappropriate for her, as there isn't much bone where her teeth used to be. But her own teeth are fine, and the two that are going to be the supports are perfect as supports. It will replace a plastic denture that her previous dentist did for her, and she's never been happy with. (The denture is OK - it's just she doesn't like having the plastic down there).

The cost of that will be just a little shy of 2k.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I'm 57 & as I'm not in a well paid job it isn't the sort of treatment I can afford
