    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

it's probably already been said somewhere in the last 102 pages  but don't forget to store the candles in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer, it makes them burn longer...not of course if there's a power cut cos you don't want to keep opening the freezer door  but when it's cold they can be stored outside.
  • I have lots of fancy candles in the drawers in my house and really they were just meant for mood lighting now and then or for a bit of scent. I have been aware of candle dangers ie fire safety and I had a glimmer of knowledge about the chemical aspect too. I have been googling and it strikes me that candles can be quite a bad pollutant

there is much more about the soot on the web

so I am going to rely on my wind up lanterns and not candles. I won`t stop lighting the odd one but I will certainly not have a few lit in the same room any more
  • This is a long thread and I haven't read it all but I wondered if hayboxes have been mentioned here. I have been thinking about making one for a while. Basically you bring your pan of soup/pots etc to the boil and then put the pan (with lid on) in a box surrounded with hay. Of course you can use any insulating material. I haven't got round to making one yet but but I use the principle. I bring the pots to the boil, wrap the pan in a couple of towels, leave for a few hours and they are done, sometimes I need to reheat them but this is still using less gas than cooking them all the way through. One thing with soup is that it doesn't thicken up so I only tend to do it with soup I'm going to blend anyway.

I've got offcuts of really thick insulation from when we had some building work done and I keep meaning to make a haybox. It looks easy to carve with a stanley knife so I was going to put several layers flat in a box and carve out a shape for a le creuset casserole.

Must get on with it now you've reminded me
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

great idea! Can you just store the gas cylinder in the garage? Won't be breaking any laws or anything? I am forever the worrier. going to look out for one. thanks:T
    Mumoftwo,

We keep our Trailer Tent, complete with gas bottles (2 types) in the garage, no problem at all.

Since we got the TT my DH keeps saying we should get rid of the twin-burner gas cooker we used to use when we camped in a freestanding tent, but I won't let him as I am paraniod about fuel cuts/outages. My kitchen cooker is gas, so as long as the gas supply is Ok I can light it with a match if there's no electricity, but if the gas was cut off for any reason then we'd have no heat and no cooking except boiling the electric kettle....cue the camping cooker! Oh - I just realised, I'd have the slow-cooker too - so I could come up with a pretty good menu I reckon!
