  • This is a good cheap site for picking up bargains. I am waiting for an amazon wind-up head torch to arrive. It cost under £9. I got free p+p by adding several bits and bobs for my £10 christmas baskets

I don`t know what happened there. The site is offeroftheday. co.uk
  • lots of us are going to be able to use gas hobs for cooking if the electric goes off but its no good without handy matches or lighters as the ignition works on electric. I am putting a full box in the drawer next to the hob. We had a power cut last week and since then I put a wind up torch in the bedroom by the door

Someone mentioned doing a blindfolded trial and it is surprising how hard it can be to find torches etc, that you need to see by. Each floor is going to get some sort of wind up light here and I am putting one on the radiator cover in the hall, landing 1 and landing 2. I have plenty of candles but they are neatly in drawers and will need to be set up on plates or somesuch

Yes - I think if blind people can learn then so can I. they have no option and just have to get on with it so I can do the same. I'm just terrified I put my hand or bare feet on a PIDER . Argggh !
  • Elona thanks very much for letting me know where to buy the wind up torch. Will pop into our local Tesco tomorrow, and have a rummage:)

  • Oh yes carriebradshaw:) I can remember then, and my Mother getting me to stand in a different queue as if we were not together to buy a couple of bags of sugar, slipping me the money from her purse like we were undercover. Then we noticed a lot of other children doing the same thing:) It was what you did back then eh? I loved the board games too, and it felt exciting going about with a candle when you were younger.

yes that's it, kind of like being sent off on a secret mission for us lot lol

ooh just remembered the ice one the insides of windows too and huuuge icicles hanging off the guttering and window ledges happy days eh? lol don't see them so much now
  • We get plenty of power cuts where I live already, but they are rarely for more than an hour, we get a lot that last just long enough to mean you have to reset clocks on things though - hence all my things with clocks on show the wrong times! When we moved to this village we were told we'd fit right in as we had four children, apparently everyone here has lots of kids due to the power cuts lol! Well I've still only got four, must be cos I have plenty of candles, lots of books and a gas fire lol!

Reading this thread has just jogged my memory about my nan's house, me and my cousins used to be there all the time, and the old hallway was big, long and very very cold, instead of going upstairs to the loo and freezing on the way we used to prefer to use the outside loo! Even in the snow i'm sure it was warmer out there than in that hallway!

If things get tougher with regards to power supplies I think it will be a huge surprise for a lot of people, it is easy to forget that even though I'm not that old these things are just a long forgotten part of history to many!

That is one advantage we have then :D My OH is blind and he is much better in the dark than I am, He was the one getting up to find dummy for DD when they were babies as he was quiet, didn' t trip up and was better at finding the dummy on the floor in the dark. If we have a powercut we will just all hold onto him and sent him for the torch and candles :D

We were in a big shopping centre yesterday and it was mobbed. DD had birthday money to spend and I tried to persuade her to spend it wisely but her and her pal had their hearts set on a bear from the Bear factory, where you personalise them, add sounds and outfits, all way over priced,if you ask me, but that is what they wanted.

You should have seen the queue!! It was so busy, My DD and friend choose the cheapest bear etc but there were parents there buying £20 bears, a £4 heartbeat and outfits, all because it had Hannah Montana written on it.

It seems that some people still have money to spend. I like the feeling of knowing I can pay my bills, love a bargain and sales and have a bit in reserve if there is an emergency or tough times ahead

Mumoftwo, that always strikes me as well. How many people still have money and what rubbish they spend it on.. It's things like that make you feel like you're on a different planet .Although the OH says in my case, I am.

Many people still have plastic debt cards but will eventually realise that the goods aren't free.
