That was writen in 2000 and in the last paragraph it sums up the fact that labour turned there backs on re -nationalising utility companies in favour of further privatisation. It doesnt cover what labour have done since.
No matter what has been done by previous governments labour has done nothing to resolve this issue...and that is what really gets my goat.
Blame lies at their door because they have been in power long enough to change things and yet keep blaming decisions made nearly 30 years ago.
I dont give a monkeys who is in power as long as they do whats in the best interests of this country...I have yet to see any politition who fills those shoes IMHO......and all the while people are struggling to make ends meet. Things getting tougher...you bet they are.
I hope you dont think I am trying to offend you in any way because I wouldnt dream of doing that......its just something that really bugs me. xx

I have never been a `political animal` either, like a lot of people I was too busy keeping a roof over our heads and the children fed and clothed to think about it too much. I always voted Labour, thinking they would do their best for the working people and the country as a whole. I can`t tell you how let down I have felt with this current government, they seem no different from all the previous ones, squandering this countries assets, whilst a lot of them seem to feather their own nests.

I always thought, naively it seems, that any Government was there to do the best for the country and its people. A cynical friend tells me that the common people don`t matter, there to work when needed, but disposable when not.

Plus, the country altogether seems to be owned by foreign interests, even the football teams.

I wish I hadn`t thought about this subject now, I feel really depressed, I felt better when I didn`t think about things so much. Sorry if I have made anyone else feel down. :o

Anyway, they won't eat brown bread and am trying to put slightly healthier stuff into the lunches starting from this term. It's only one day in the week they stay over (plus the weekend) so only one day to sort packlunch for.

Thinking banana and choc chip muffins instead of the much loved crisps (rest hidden in the freezer), banana flapjack another week. They won't eat raisins. But got an apple and grapes instead of a chocolate bar this week ;)

Hehe! They talk about 'wicked Stepmothers' but we could start a start a thread about 'clueless Birthmothers' Haha!

it is quite hard to think up new things they will eat in their lunchboxes.

One thing my SK's liked in theirs was sticks of carrot, cucumber (& celery for DSD, but not the boys!) with a whole Cheese Spread Triangle - they eat it like a dip. I also give them tomato/cucumber slices separately so they can add to their sandwich/roll at lunchtime - this is a habit of mine 'cos I hate the bread to go soggy myself.

Luckily mine eat raisins, but maybe you could try yours with the ones covered in chocolate or yoghurt - not quite so healthy, but at least there's fruit in there!

If crisps are 'essential' I get the shop's own, much cheaper and usually smaller packets so they don't have so much of the unhealthy stuff.

Muffins sound great! Any home-made cakes & biscuits go down well with my lot - partly the novelty of them I reckon - LOL!

    Good luck,

    FE

Have just put a turkey leg in the slow cooker for later and used my small top oven to cook something else.

DH was at home and very concerned that the oven was still whirring after I had switched it off!(fan oven)

After a bit of discussion of how wasteful I felt it was to have the small oven on for things like rolls or sweet potato cakes, yet not wanting to fry stuff as it was unhealthy- he is slowly coming round to the idea of a Remoska.:j

If I give it a couple more weeks he will have convinced himself it is his idea!!!!;)
I also showed him the article about a possible "winter of discontent" and that has really made him think.

I'm following your remoska saga and it has made me smile every time you post about it!

Yesterday I did potatoes boulangere (sp?) in mine, and they always seem to take forever in the oven, 40 mins and they were done! Had to wait for the rest of dinner to be ready lol! Then I made a chilli in it for me and oh's dinner. Today I've done rolls and the mince part of the cottage pie (only took 30mins, which threw me a bit as I usually do it in the sc), will put the potato topping on later and brown it just before the kids come home. Then I will be using it to cook apple braids, got the dough in the bm at the mo, planning on little ones for the kids to take in their packed lunches.

It is so quick and easy to just pop things in it. It also makes the most amazing toad in the hole and focaccia, it is worth it just for those two things alone!

I'm certain it is saving me a huge amount of money. Can't wait till you post that your oh has had a great idea and suggested that you buy one! ;)

I have been on entitledto web site and we would be financailly better of if I left my husband and becaime a single parent who doesnt work. Thats not a dig at single parents......its a dig at the system, and guess what I would also qualify for the fuel allowance no doubt...as well as full c/t benifit free school dinners etc etc etc etc. The system stinks.

    :T :T :T

Totally agree.... we are actually only £100 a month better off in wages than a single parent is on benefits - for my partner to work 48 hours a week....and that £100 doesnt take the free school dinners or fuel allowences or any other "incentives" into account such as fees for courses etc.. which i want to do but the budget wont allow the £350... if i was a single mum however it would be free.

Im not digging at single mums either at all........ its not their fault our government penalises families....

No at all offended - this is just a chat forum after all, not real life ;)

I was using that link to answer a direct question as to when the utilities were privatised, and who was responsible. I'm sure, with time and patient searching, I could have found a more recent one, but I have a life to live :D

This is wandering well off topic now, so I suggest that if there's further political discussion required, it be taken to Discussion Time

The remoska saga is the latest one - before that I coveted a breadmaker for ages before I finally bought one- had a MR for years and proved I would use one before I saw a panasonic for sale at Amazon and bought it.(saved £40 and free delivery!)

Took ages agonising over a slow cooker about four years ago and now DH loves the thing. He has been known to eat pea and ham soup or chicken curry at 7a.m.!!

For ages thought the slow cooker was faulty as the level kept dropping until I found him scoffing the contents for breakfast!!!

DH seems to think the SC is like "The Magic Porridge Pot" that never empties and just refills itself!!!!

I now work on the principle that as long as we can afford it what he does not know won't hurt him! But items that cost over about £40 or so I feel he should know about.

Besides I can't smuggle a Grande Remoska up my jumper!!! Lol!

I posted the recipe for sweet potato burgers on the thread where you asked about them.

All this talk of Remoskas is just cruel :p

I ordered my remoska nearly 4 weeks ago (got it at the cheaper price :T ) and its missing in action.. According to Lakeland they thought It had got to the BFPO office -but no record of it there  .... so they have re-sent the order (although they have had to refund for the 6 bottles of washing up liquid as its now out of stock  )... so somewhere out there are 2 remoskas with MY name on them  .... Just waiting to see if non, 1 or both turn up... hope the 1st one makes it.. I want my washing up liquid too:rotfl: ...
If both arrive then they will arrange to get get one back -heck knows how out here..
but I just want my remoska :D .... how is a girl to save energy without her remoska  :rotfl:

Well I am a wicked stepmother - before I came along they used to help themselves to the contents of the biscuit tin. Now they have to ask and get 4 biscuits put on a plate ;) Their mum and stepdad have some weight issues and give them those large cinema size packs of minstrels each as a snack  I want to make sure we don't contribute to the kids ending up that way (they're not overweight now but I still want to check without them knowing ;))

Mrs M - sorry, hope it or they turn up soon! I'm sure once you have yours we shall all become even more money saving with your amazing recipes! Your wraps are a legend in our house, and I've passed the recipe on to several other people, more than one of whom have said "oh they're so much nicer than the shop ones" lol! Well that'll be the reason for making them then! We also love your breadsticks, if only I could make them faster!

Elona - thanks for the recipe, have copied it down into my little pink book, dd2 has already asked if when she leaves home she can have one with all my recipes in! Will give them a try, they sound really nice. My oh and ds seem to think of the sc as a magic pot as well, have learnt my lesson and scoop up the extra pretty sharpish into containers for the freezer! Didn't think to do that with the remoska and they devoured all of the chilli, and it was a full pot of the stuff and I own the grande! Ah well, I shall know for next time! I know what you mean about waiting for stuff though, I really wanted a bm after reading about everyone using them, I tried a cheap one and eventually had to return it as it was so hopeless, but it did prove that I'd use one, and my panasonic is probably the only machine that works harder than my wm!
