I think there will be a massive backlash re the benefit culture that has grown in this country. The uk is running out of money and what little we have `spare` is being spent on fat camps for children etc. For goodness sake this nanny culture has gone too far. We as a group of people can only take so much. There is stuff popping up all the time on the mse board that makes me cringe ie people with massive debts but asking about the best way to get to france for a holiday. I despair
You hang in there sammy-kaye and don`t forget that what goes around comes around (eventually)
my own situation is that we have savings because we were like sammy-kaye all our lives but we value our savings because they will help us into a comfortable old age, when it really matters. We were so skint that my dh drove back from our camping holiday in wales (little company car) and picked the beans and tomatoes in the garden so that we could eat
Little by little we saved up but it was hard earned and no way is it going down the pan now.0 -
Reading the skint bit by Kittie reminded me when we were so short of cash [paid weekly then] that we never had a shilling for the meter, we managed to scrape about 9d together and went over the pub, then nursed half pint of beer all evening in the free warmthEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0

Being skint might not be nice at the time but it does make you appreciate things more, and the good times seem even nicer when they come.0

What gets me is the way people look at you if you say anything sensible..like making kids go to bed at a certain time and starting it from an early age and standing no nonsense... like making them go out and play and run around to keep fit &warm, like using my wee candle stove that SammyKaye told me about...they look at me as if I'm this mad batty woman LOL !
The benefits thing is different with us, because we both worked all our lives & then both got ill, & benefits are now our life line. But different for the ones that SK is talking about as they have never worked.
in the 3 day week I was hauling a big high pram up 7 flights of pitch black stairs, we lived in a tower block in Edinburgh. Don't want to go back to those days0 -
Well.....theres "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist" - think author was Robert Tressell - its a fiction book - but one of those that everyone needs to read at least once:cool:

oooh, thats better. I got a lot of this political correctness stuff off my chest. I have been dying to say things but didn`t dare. Thanks SK for giving me courage
Back to normal mse stuff now: I have looked at my wardrobe and its full of nice clothes that I have hardly worn, mostly hm by the way. Summer clothes for a summer that once again, hasn`t materialised. I have been most comfortable wearing 3 hm A line long cotton skirts that I made and can wear them day in day out but with a variety of tops. I am going to get real!!! Today I cut out 3 A line skirts in a lovely soft medium weight brushed cotton that cost me less than £2 a metre, shirt material and made in Italy and with a very suitable houndstooth pattern. I am glad to say that I have 30 m in 3 different colours. Tomorrow I will run them up
They will go perfectly with jumpers and cardigans, layered with a slip and tights as needed. I need jumpers and knitting wool is quite a price so I googled and found this site
http://woolovers.co.uk/
I have ordered jumpers costing <£20 for me and my dh. Pure wool like this one
http://woolovers.co.uk/style.aspx?mens-wool-button-sweater-jumper
so that is my wardrobe sorted for this winter and probably years to come
Now I have to rack my brain to find somewhere to store all the summer clothes that are barely worn. lol, I am getting very good at getting a quart into a pint pot0 -

On 'Honey We're Killing the Kids' one of the big problems with the children's education was that they were tired - because they stayed up until very late watching television and dvd's in their bedroom.
Once the parents cut this out there were big improvements at school. (I know it was other things as well, but the lack of sleep was very important.)
ps - what is the candle stove please.0 -

Really sorry - I didn't mean Morrisons - I meant Wilkinsons! Must be even more tired than I thought I was.......The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"

Ooh! I remember doing similar in the early 90's with my first husband. At the end of the week we'd have to count up all our change and usually scrape together enought for about 4 halves, then sip them very slowly - we used to make them last about 2 hours...the only heating we had was an electric fire and it used the power up so quickly that we worked out it was cheaper to go to the pub!
Mind you, after I discovered that he was a lying, cheating, money-spending git and finally got shot of him, my finances increased amazingly! - It might have cost me a lot to get rid of him, but in the end my divorce was the most money-saving thing I've ever done - LOL!!!!!!The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"
