right I need an opinion guys. I have my part of the wedding savings (about 800 quid) in an egg savings account and with interest rates the way they are I'm earning naff all interest (about 81p after tax). I have an overdraft on my current account thats costing me (because I'm overdrawn by over 1000, costing me about 21 quid a month). Am I better transferring the wedding money to my overdraft for the moment and save myself some of the interest each month?

Hi Unixgirluk - I would do that, perhaps leaving a small amount in your savings so as not to feel disheartened. Then transfer the amount you're saving in interest to the savings every month - this way you still have the same amount of money but you won't be lining the banks pockets!

Sounds like a plan Lilian, I'm trying to be good and ebay all my clutter to make extra dosh. Getting nowhere fast and I've got loads left to ebay (lots of bras in my old size which apparently is quite popular due to the way they've been selling and lots of bravissimo stuff too). You;d think this would be an incentive to get the rest onto ebay but it hasn't and i've been doing it a little at a time and the pile of stuff doesn't seem to be getting any smaller.

Sorry guys I'm feeling really down today.

So how much shall I transfer? 500? That would at least make a dent in the overdraft interest and when I need the wedding money its there so to speak (albeit an overdraft) although I may set myself little goals of getting the rest of my clutter ebay'd but might need a little prodding if no-one minds:o

Ok I have just done this - if your overdraft is safe and can't be taken from you I would move the whole lot - or if you feel its dodgy at all - leave it where it is.

Its an extra 20 quid a month to the wedding - over £100 quid by wedding day - so that should spurn you on. I'd only move it if it was absolutaly guaranteed that the od is safe.

  • hello peeps,
i love reading this thread, never fails to make me laugh........

    fingers crossed for you unixgirluk.

Hope the ducks appreciate the hot cross buns - mind on they eat any old tat so get digging in the cupboards etc for any delights you might have and get the kids to make a 'duck potion' - crumble up all the dry stuff in a big bowl and then mix it up whilst its dry - then you can pop it into a couple bags - first bag for the intial enthusiasm - second bag as a treat for when the first one is finished - clever old mum that you are xx

Unixgirl - I have made around £200 in a month on Ebay by selling my old records from the box on top of my wardrobe. It's free money if it's stuff you'll never use again! xx

Hugs to Unix - will keep my fingers crossed that you're not on the black list, I avoided it last time but there are strong rumours the axe is about to be swung again.

Hugs to Fay - hope the doldrums ease, you can't be the queen of procrastination, that's my job *blows raspberry*

Hugs to everyone else too cos I'm nice and am wearing yellow, green and blue stripey socks under my boots today :)

Always happy on a Thursday as its my last day of working week, DD is seeing her daddy tomorrow (cue discussion about CSA/maintenance, well I'll talk and he'll grunt) anyway I get to spend an afternoon doing whatever I like, woo hoo. Also meeting some new people from the singlewithkids website at a local play place, DD is tickled pink.
  • Hi Fay, I've just finished reading your diary and had a few laugh out loud moments.

Fingers crossed unix, we recently had redundancies and hoping no more bad news on the way. I'm off sick at the moment and hoping that nothing is happening whilst I'm away.

Fay, we mealplan and it's saved us loads on the shopping bill. There's a mealplanning thread here in os if you haven't already found it. A new one gets started every week.

I'm off to find the spending diary link you mentioned earlier.

Thanks guys, just been out to Tesco's to get part of the weekly shop (all the cupboard stuff). Not bad eleven quid. I'm estimating the chilled stuff I'll need will be about 6 quid and thats for 4 of us. I've got loads in the freezer so planning on using it up.

I've shifted 500 to my overdraft. They're making money off me so its safe (even after I've paid the 500). I'll need to get my whatsit into gear and get everything else onto ebay. Lillian you've given me a little motivation, thats quite a sum every month just for records.
