  • Its in the freezer silly - I'd get into trouble for keeping live wild birds in the house - tut tut

    OK Dilema

To tax or not to tax - Darwin - he passed his MOT with no bother at all

Other car is due MOT this week as well deep joy - but its cheaper to run and taxed til end next March

SO as Darwin is mechanically sound and I have lots of writing to do over next 3 months - wondering about contacting my local 'tame' garage and seeing about getting a quote to get some of his body work done (Shetland money - extra)

Therefore if I do that - wisest thing is to take him off the road for a few months, save the tax and get some body work done to him ?

Its kinda a 'what do folks think' is it sensible or silly?

PAD to evil edna she's now paid off by £520

I have managed to get my new RBS online saver to work and its got £400 in it at the moment (brothers November rent and some money towards tax/mot for cars)

Cooking is all sorted and in the fridge/freezer

This week I have to: (thanks urg for the idea)
Sort out a meeting with my aberdeen supervisor and agree a timescale for writing
Finalise field data into the computer organise it and do some analysis
    Start using refworks properly
Locate all of my files on old laptop and organise them, move the ones accross I need and burn the others onto a disk - clear laptop, reformat and give to DD for use for homework etc
    Arrange for chookie feeding
See if I can get doggi number 1 (Heather - insane collie) to be dog sat whilst I am sooth
Tidy up greenhouse, convervatory before I go
Do a mower pass for leaf picking up over whole garden
Write the lesson for Thursday night (herbs already written, lettuce and salad crops to write and do a hand out)
Book ferry and get appropriate discounts
Book MOT for car at OH garage south
Work a timetable of work with supervisors that might allow me to have longer south with OH if I can (laptop and I can work anywhere)
    List for the storecupboard
Chase up viking direct for the discount they promised re price match for laptop
Tax or not to tax darwin need to decide
Iphone to update before I go
Find out about updating my phone
Get OH to text/email his brothers GF about his brothers 30th pressie
Sort out shopping bags and set a sensible budget for shopping

Who knows what else this week - before we head 'sooof' there's always lots to think about

hi fay, just popping in to see how you were doing.

i think (if my opinion is worthy of your lovely diary) that it's a good idea to SORN Darwin and get his bodywork done if you're not going to use him for a while. that way you can put the tax money towards the work and he'll be nice and shiney and new for your next trip

    i think it's a sensible idea.

Hi Fay! A weekly list is a good idea, I think - gives you an idea of the shape of the week, especially when you're a self starter - a lot of time can be wasted otherwise.

I agree with starnac - get Darwin off the road for a bit, especially since its the winter coming up, put the investment into him when it can do most good.

Good luck with the spending more time at OH's!

    Morning,

No idea what you should do re Darwin - I've had my van nearly 4 years and it's never even been CLEANED, let alone had any body work done, so I'm probably not best person to ask!

And as for the table cloth - didn't even spot it under all those containers of lovely food! :)

EH - the tooth was a relatively tiny bit... but I actually did this before (to a different tooth) several years ago, just before I went on holiday for a month :) Ignored it, and ate on other side of mouth. Then eventually it hurt, so had a filling, then got an abcess under the filling, then had to have the entire tooth taken out! Bah!

So I'm trying to get to the dentist for this one! :)
  • Morning all - waves to KC, cheerydaff and Starnac :) and any lovlies that come along later on - Cheery hope you get to the dentist.

The plan with Darwin (being VW - he 'shouldn't depreciate' he's mechanically pretty sound - he was once a minibus for a school in the highlands before he was converted) - We got him relatively cheaply with a whole 2 pallets of spares and looking at similar models online he's already doubled his value - so the plan was to perhaps tart up his body work a bit and tart up his inside (in true MSE style) and keep or increase his value as an asset of sorts - (make sense?) - therefore if he's more presentable I can either 'rent him' now and again or posh him up to sell on (darwin shut your ears!).

My moral concious (sp?) however struggles with the carbon footprint of twa cars and the costs of running both - ideal I guess might be to have each car alternatively 6 months off the road (?) and upkeep both as best I can. (sounds logical the practicalities of it....not sure). Citroen isn't worth selling - its a fantastic car - but not worth very much - 7 years old I figure I'd be better to keep it til I can 'scrap' it when its 10

  • Morning all!
Been lurking again for a long time - by the time I've read everyone's posts there's no time left to write anything!
Well impressed with all the cooking Fay! I thought I was doing well; this weekend I cooked a big batch of beef stew (kind of like boef bourginon but with more veg) in the big slow cooker and dusted off the little one (which we were going to give to a friend but he doesn't seem to need it now as he's moved back to 5 minutes away from his parents so eats there!) and experimented with potatoes boulangere, which was also a success - so that will do at least 3 evening meals for the 3 of us. Ate it with Yorkshires too in true MSE style. Then made a big veg lasagne with grated courgette mixed with chopped onion, chard and garlic and sauce from frozen green tomatoes - all from the garden - really yummy and still half left for another evening. So that should last us all week until Friday when we have a couple of friends arriving and plan to feed them on a big batch of frozen spaghetti bolognese. Just need to make some apple puddings another night as apples are accumulating.
You put me to shame though!

The plan to SORN Darwin and do him up sounds like a good one, he is an investment so worth looking after - and of course you get to enjoy him too! And as for the carbon footprint of 2 cars - well you still only drive one at a time so it shouldn't make any difference now thay are already manufactured.

Teeth - there was talk a few pages back of cleaning teeth properly - that's something I only learned to do a few years ago, believe it or not! As a child I always cleaned mine, but basically just scrubbed back and forth, I didn't know any other way, and had the same child's toothbrush until I left home at 19 (my parents wouldn't consider buying a new brush every few months - my Dad scrubbed his teeth with his until the bristles were worn away!) Anyway as a teenager needed some teeth out as too crowded, and also they were bad - so I thought 'well all that brushing was a waste of time!' and practically gave it up for the next decade - 8 years living on a boat with no running water inside didn't encourage it either - and then found that when I did brush my teeth it made my gums bleed so that just put me off even more - didn't realise that was a sign of gum disease! Finally now understand better and have also discovered those little interdental brushes as teeth are very close together still, but by now I think every one of my teeth are filled, hope I can teach my daughter to do better! I can't be the only person to be this ignorant in the tooth department though can I?
Sorry to ramble on - off to get a coffee now!

Waves Hi - you did a mighty amount of cooking yourself this week! well reminded on the apples - I found an old tree at the end of the garden and need to pick up and freeze the apples :) - you sound mega organised!!

Teeth - great advice - I am lucky not to have had much bad teeth experience (one filling, couple wisdom teeth out) DS had probs to begin with but thankfully both he and DD have no fillings so far........I do need to try harder with brushing though.

OK Troglodyte - wassthis then? ......... and experimented with potatoes boulangere,
