Hi Fay sorry I haven't been around. I wanted to think about what was said to you before I replied. And also I wanted to see others replies too.

Firstly I loved whoever it was who posted that Albert Einstein and all the other Nobel prize winner ( and Richard Branson) all had dyslexia. It makes the point that dyslexia is NOT A INDICATOR OF LOW INTELLIGENCE. Quite the reverse. It really umped me off that the implication of their finding is that the dyslexia makes you not intelligent enough to get be capable of the work on a PHD. Just how much bull !!!!!! are they going to try and shovel to cover up that they HAVE BEEN FAILING TO SUPPORT YOU, despite you asking for help, asking for better supervision (or hell any supervision, that wasn't supercillious, vicious, sexist or belittling).

I mean chuffing hell it isn't as if this is a sudden new problem that has just been discovered. I had a friend nearly 25 years ago at school who was diagnosed with it and we were all envious (cos we didn't know what it really was) cos he got extra time to do his exams, so that he wasn't disadvantaged.

How would giving you the same help devalue the PHD. I absolutely think you should invoked the Disability Discrimination Act here somehow, because they are discriminating against you because of a problem you have. If you were blind then they would have to sort you out with a talking computer or something, and extra help to read the books that weren't in braille. You know what I mean. They would be NO way that they would get away with telling a blind person, thanks for your work but you can't do a PHD cos you are blind......

I believe you have an excellent chance of sueing the !!! off them if they don't let you do a PHD on the grounds that
    1) you have a recognised condition, that they refuse to put in place help for
    2) you have been pyscologically bullied by the very supervisor that should have been flagging these issues, getting you the support, and generally constructively rather than damagingly (is that even a word) criticising your work
    3) your appeals to have a different supervisior, and your evidence of the problem have been ignored, such that you have been put under intolerable stress. EVEN THOUGH they KNOW there is a problem with this CREEP from a previous complaint, they have not done ENOUGH to address this issue.
    4) Had they addressed this issue then your ability to focus on your work (not this mr richard head who has made your life a misery and done his best to make you feel worthless) would have increased, and there is a good chance that you would have correctly met your deadlines inspite of the dyslexia.

THAT is why I had to wait to write.I am impossibly angry on your behalf and if I had written this the day I had read about it there wouldn't have been much to read cos it would have been crossed out by the swear filter! I bet none of these pompous old far ts could have got half as far as you have, AND pay off debt. AND look after 2 children, AND look after a lodger, AND deal with a !!!!!! of a supervisor, AND deal with a long distance relationship, AND deal with an ex who doesn't come through with money when he should! They would be quivering wrecks at about the 3rd AND!:D

YOU ABSOLUTELY CHUFFING CAN DO THIS AND DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU DIFFERENT!

Right I hope that you have a great holiday and enjoying meeting some of your DFW supporters.

You have them by the short and curlies on this.......they just don't know it yet...

I am sleeping alot (?) and have got everything in writing from the supervisors and taking legal, uni and advice from the dyslexia association and dyslexia action.

I also have 4 books on dyslexia - a book on grammar and a book on teach yourself punctuation.

    Excellent holiday reading :)

Roll over and put my stripey socks in the air -- um not me - thanks for spurning me on :)

Will catch up properly later on and read now I have internet access.

Zoo was awesome, and no they didn't keep me in the monkey house - despite OH SUGGESTING they tried to keep me as some kind of freckly, stripey new monkey species

Chev as always me dear - you are a star - and on a roll :). The rest of you are indeed wonderful and awesome as always. Nothing to report from home, I think our French student thinks the weather in Orkney is ALWAYS wonderful - doh.

Lol about the monkeys, when angelflower posted the link, I thought that it was to be to an article about your terrible treatment (at the hands of the university not the monkeys...lol) as you had decided to go public with it all. So I nearly spit coffee over the keyboard when the article came up and it was about monkeys escaping.

    :D
take care and I hope that you send them to hell in a hand cart, they REALLY don't know what they are dealing with...

    :T Go Chev! :T

I agree with you chev... how can they do what they appear to be doing? At the minimum they should be giving Fay time (with the appropriate support in place) to see if it makes a difference - she has only just been diagnosed! Dyslexia is not a valid (or legal!) reason to not permit her to finish her PhD! All it means is Fay may need some support to do so. There have been several people here with dyslexia that have done a PhD - and they managed fine with the correct support.

One of the brightest honours students we've had recently in the lab was dyslexic and mildly dyspraxic. We did have to make a few minor changes but it wasn't exactly a pain to do so - the main ones were to give her written instructions rather than verbal ones and make sure if she was doing something new to give her the written protocols well ahead of when she had to do them. Pretty much things that meant we had to be a bit more orgaised too! :rotfl: She got some writing support and had extra time to write up. I think she got a first in the end! She is now doing a PhD at Cambridge and positively thriving on the challenge!
