    Hey Fay

Are you keeping a record of these incidents?

The way in which he has behaved - both in written and in person - is getting out of control. He needs to communicate with you properly and treat you with respect. If he isn't able to do that then he shouldn't be allowed to supervise students!!!!

    GRRRRRRR to crap supervisers.

Grrrr indeed, fay I am almost speechless with crossness at this stupid excuse-for-a-man's behaviour. Good on ya being all stripey socked and confident tomorrow. You make sure he gets what he deserves. Grrr.

I started a diary a while back of all his 'in and oouts of my office - distrubing me'.
So now i am adding this stuff to the list.

    Ta chaps

His last student won't talk to him and they nearly came to blows several times. Our direct boss is aware of him, but does nothing about him. Other student formally complained but nothing was done.

My Other (keeping up here?) Supervisor is the head of science at my Uni (nice job title but thats all it is really) but it does make him the boss of both my evil supervisor and his direct boss - still with me - hold on I will do a food chain diagram

    me (bottom clearly

    DOS - Supervisor no 1

Supervisor no 2 - DOS boss
Supervisor no 3 - Head of Dept boss for Uni
Supervisor no 4 - Scary but nice Aberdeen man

No 2 is away on a field trip which bypasses that bit for the mo.

So no 1 and 3 are meeting me tomorrow.

No 4 has been emailed and got all my substandard work and am awaiting his response.

Don't normally get to talk to No 4

    Hi Fay

I just read Essexhebridean's diary and had to come over and read yours too. Her's however is only 4 pages long so far. Yours might take me a while to catch up on but have read the first 4 pages and the last 2 so that I know what is happening just now while I get to grips with the rest. Hope everything goes okay tomorrow with your meeting.:grouphug:

Your first 4 pages had me choking on my coffee and laughing enough to wake up my DS. I just couldn't explain the GP in the freezer to her.:rotfl:

As i mentioned in my post on EH's diary - no stripey socks here but purple stripey afghan slippers - do they count?

Looking forward to reading the rest of the diary.

 How on earth was he allowed to take on any further PhD students? He obviously has problems... he is 3 for 3 on P!ssed off unhappy students! Do you know if he did the same thing he is doing to you now, to them?

I'm glad you are keeping a record of it all - it may be useful to take it or some of it with you to your meeting as proof? (or print out some of his more abrasive comments if he's emailed them to you?) I'd also have a look on your institute/uni (UHI??) websites for any anti-bullying policies and in your student handbook or similar for info too. He has no right to treat you like this .

It is his job to encourage and direct you not belittle and bully you! From what you've said I take it you are relatively early in the PhD process? Its supposed to be a learning process, writing included! I don't know a single student who can do everything perfectly from the start. Everyone is different! Mind you it seems he is on some kind of a power trip so your writing is probably fine.

    Good luck with your meeting!

PS Where is the best place in Edinburgh to get stripey socks? I've got a meeting on Wednesday with my boss - and I'd like some stripey courage... :p

Good luck with your meeting today Fay. Will be thinking of you x

I would think about using the Uni complaints procedures if it does not get resolved satisfactorily. I 'share' a PhD student, and the regulations, what you can / cannot do etc are scary  - a great big thick book of them. Presumably your uni has something similar, and your supervisor must be breaching several of them

My supervisors were useless and scary and hardly ever there when I did my PhD, but not horrible like yours!

The regulations have been revised / added to since then so useless and hardly ever there are not allowed now either

    Morning L and thank you

Looking good this am chigon, nice blouse (opted for nice rather than OMG you are a woman) earrings and a necklace (ladeda - will have to take this lot OFF later when I lug around some willow.). Even got on mascara :)

Thanks chaps - will keep cool and will try to bring up a few points as well. prob with me is that I go to peices unless its an email.

Taka - poundstretcher, Tescos or any 'bugdet shop' usually has stripey socks. Tescos are doing a nice line is stripeys at the mo

Dawn - I doubt anything I say will get taken seriously - the Aberdeen man has talked about 'training' my supervisors as they don't have much experience. I think to be honest the person I would most benefit from is him - but getting to him is rather tricky.

Scottish Mummy - whoops to the Freezer :) morning and undooubetly any foot wear is very appropriate

I have my knee length neon stripeys by my side about to put on.

EH hello my lovey hope you are OK

Waves to you all - brother helping with field work so I can relax on that front because at the moment I am supposed to be both writing and doing yields for 6.5 ha - thankfully brother owes me lots of favours (and dosh so we came to a cunning arrangement which involves willow, cakes and him helping. Hurrah

OH thinking of flying up to punch supervisor on the nose - told him to calm down - no one needs a 6ft 1 redish haired chap comingn off of the plane and punching them on the nose.

    Mind you.......

On the positive side today - hurrah 2 eggs, several slugs murdered. I am attempting to work all night which isn't really working so I went to bed at 12 and got up at 6.30 - trying to push back my get up time to earlier so I can have more productive time during the day.

The funniest thing however was watching a slightly chunky collared dove, balancing on the fence trying desperately not to fall off and eat some seeds from the seed container hanging up. Put me in mind of a lovely curvey ample lady on a tightrope heading towards some cakes :) in the style of Beryl Cook :)

Oh and our bluebells are gorgeous :)
