    Try Steinberg Clean:

Not a bad price at £29.

P2P = peer to peer, a form of filesharing made popular by Napster.

    Eg. Kazaa, DC++, Emule

Just a reminder that converting formats is illegal unless you own the copyright. Depending on how many you're doing you might find downloading the tracks off a P2P service is easier as someone will have done the touching up for you. It is of course just as illegal as transferring them but most record companies tend to class it as fair use and just go after the ones downloading without purchasing at all.

    Alex.

I always thought that you were permitted to have a 'back up' copy of any program/music that you purchased? I think that you will be far nearer staying on the right side of the law by transferring your own tapes to CD, rather than downloading someone elses copy from the web. Remember, music downloads from the web can be monitored.

You are not allowed to change the format of the music (i.e. from casette to cd, cd to mp3) etc. without permission from the copyright holder. There was an article on how to do this in an issue of PC Advisor Magazine with a warning about this (and the full what you can and can't do).

Sure hope you mean £19.99 :):)

Magix is easy to setup. It comes with a big manual but if you accept all defaults and watch the video that it offers you after installation you should be able to do everything very quickly without wading through the manual

The only thing I didn't accept was the option to let the media player "Magix media manager silver" become my default player - I like using windows media player even though silver is pretty good

    that's what I would say..

although it is true you're not allowed to change the format.. they class a back up as a copy of cassete.. Then again I shouldn't worry too much..
  • One small point: there's no need to convert your wav to mp3 before you burn it to CD. The CD burning software will have to convert it back anyway!

MP3 is a method of making the file smaller. It uses lossy compression. Put simply, it throws away those parts of the sound that your ears shouldn't be able to hear. How successful this is depends on the bitrate that you use. The higher the bitrate the bigger the file and the better the quality.

Admittedly this process may not be as bad as recording on an audio cassette but there's still no point in introducing this unnecessary stage unless you actually want to end up with an MP3.
  • there is a new product out called plusdeck that fits into a 5.25" drive bay.

It lets you play audio cassettes in your pc so you can convert them to digital media.

check the following link for more info - I have heard it may retail for around £80 in the UK - so have a look around

Considering Argos are now selling cheap walkman-type casette players for £3 (IIRC) and a lead will cost you another couple of quid (no more than £3) £80 does seem a little expensive but a nice idea none the less.

Wouldn't it be fairer to compare it with a hi-fi cassette deck though?

I've just looked at the Richer Sounds web site and discovered that cassette decks are one of the few items not to have fallen in price in recent years. Maybe it's because they don't sell in the numbers they used to.

My concern with the PlusDeck (apart from it being a lot of money for something I'd only use a few times) is that there's likely to be a lot of interference from the other components in the PC case.
