  • whatever area you stay in , book your hotel through priceline . you will pay about half the price . you can use the " bidding for travel " site to show you how to use the priceline site and what recent hotels went for when users post their results . shame you booked your vegas hotel , you could have saved money through priceline

Think the taxi was about $30-$35 from memory but can't say for sure, sorry.

We were there last month. The BART costs around $13 each, and then you have to get to wherever you're going from the bus terminal. We got a cab (we stayed near Fisherman's Wharf), and with a tip it was $40 for two of us. We figured this was money well spent as it was direct to our hotel with no messing around in, what was then, a strange city to us.

We absolutely fell in love with the city, by the way, and are planning to return later this year! :j

  • From one of my previous posts:

$5.35 on the BART (underground) direct from the airport to downtown - Market st and Powell. Saves mucho $$$'s on cabs or airport shuttles.

The Stratford hotel $90 a night RIGHT in the heart of it - couldn't of been any better or happier with the hotel. http://www.hotelstratford.com/ includes free "light" breakfast.

Its a holiday - so forget using the BART - get a cab for goodness sake!

Do not see the point of having a car in SF unless you are using it as a base for jumping off points to other places.

Think staying near Fishermans Wharf is good idea and think that Radisson or Holiday Inn good idea - they may even have parking there for a car. But if you want a car for just SF, its not really worth it. But then again, driving over the bridges is great and onto Nappa and Sonoma - preferred Sonoma to Nappa. Or driving down to Carmel, Big Sur etc.

Union Square is nice - for expensive shops........ but think it is better to stay in North Beach. Have a great time!

One other thing, over the Golden Gate bridge and a couple of miles to the right is a lovely place called Sausalito. You can get there by bus although we ended up walking there after walking over the bridge (certainly didn't walk back though !) Well worth a visit I would say.
  • If you have a car parked on the street over night make sure you check the parking restrictions .I failed to move the car on the day they were cleaning the street $50 fine :rotfl:

We stayed at the Westin St Francis, gorgeous public areas, crystal chandeliers in the lobby etc, but pretty expensive - the rooms were fairly standard though, apart from the beds - they are called Heavenly beds, and I'm not kidding, they are the best beds ever. It's right on Union Square, though, and walking distance to most things. Great diner just down the street (Powell Street, iirc) for breakfast, it's got half a car hanging out the wall.

we agreed that if we went back we'd probably go to the Holiday Inn round the corner on Geary Street - that was back in 2001 though, so it might not be there anymore. Then walk round and go into the lobby of the St. Francis for a nosy and a drink in the bar.;)

Would recommend this hotel in SF:

    http://www.jdvhotels.com/hotels/carlton

Pretty close to Union Square so very easy to get around. Paid about £70 a night last August.

EDIT: Free wifi in this hotel and they do free wine 'tasting' early evening

Many thanks for this advice. We checked it out on TripAdvisor, and all reviews raved about it, so we've booked it for our next trip!! :j

  • Was in SF in Aug 2007, stayed at the Parc 55 just off union square. Would recommend it throughly. To get around down at the Fishermans Wharf is a shop called Blazing Saddles which hires bicycles for doing cycling tours. We did bike the bridge which takes you over the Golden Gate then we cycled to Sausilito had some lunch and took the ferry back

We are looking for accomm. for afamily of 4 for July. Can anyone suggest an apartment that will do 3 nights or a website that we can browse. Ideally we would like to be walking distance of most attractions and with free parking.
