if that $12 is for 24 hours then that is indeed fantastic. By no means the norm though.

I cant remember if it was the day or 24hrs but it was at Pier 39? next to the Radisson Fishermans Wharf.

Would recommend this hotel in SF:

Pretty close to Union Square so very easy to get around. Paid about £70 a night last August.

EDIT: Free wifi in this hotel and they do free wine 'tasting' early evening

http://granthotel.net/ was where we stayed a couple of years ago, similar exchange rates made it about £45 a night and it was very central. Check the reviews but if it's still good then I'd recommend staying there.
  • I've been thinking about amending my car rental, cost is £25. So that I pick it up on the Sun instead of the Wed. Anyone know how much a taxi from the airport to union square would be around?

    Cheers

  • I've been to SF 6 times and most tourists tend to stay around Union Square or Fishermans Wharf. Be aware that if you stay near the cable car line they do run until pretty late so it can be noisy. Fishermans Wharf is tacky but if you don't mind that it is a pretty good place to pick up public transport as you have the choice of the bus, cable car and F line tram. If you've got plenty of money Nob Hill is very nice.

Sturll found some seriously cheap parking if it's still that price it's a bargin for San Francisco. When I was looking at hotels (I'm going back in April) I found even nothing special 3 star hotels wanted around $40 plus per day to park. As we're only stopping a couple of nights before we move on we're picking our car up as we leave as we know our way around the city and can manage well without it. It depends on what you want to see but most sights are easy to get to either walking or on public transport and traffic in the city is very busy which combined with the hills and one way system makes it easier to do without a car. This time I'm staying near the convention centre as the hotel had great reviews and a good price. It's a bit out of the way but we don't mind walking and are familiar with the area.

It's got a bit more touristy (busier and more expensive) since we first went 15 years ago but san Francisco is a great city with something for everyone I'm sure you'll have a great time.

You don't need a taxi from the airport - the BART is very efficient and cheap.
  • I liked staying here - easy access to the centre, trams, waterfront - holidayinn and holidayinn express were both good - I think the Radisson is right on the waterfront.

Don't forget to book your night tour tickets for alcatraz!

the first day my and the misses were in san fran we did a 1/2 day city tour. got to see the main sights and gave us an idea as where we wanted to go back to. in the afternoon we were taken the alcatraz.
it was a full days package and very much worth the money. we spent the following 2 days walking around SF looking at more detail at the places we'd rushed through on the initial day!
something similar to this... but i seem to remember it being much cheaper when i did it...

Family owned and very friendly/helpful owners. good area with Trams nearby and free parking to boot. rooms are what you expect from a reasonable Motel. nothing flash , but clean and comfy.
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

Think the taxi was about $30-$35 from memory but can't say for sure, sorry. We took a taxi just for convenience, until we got our bearings in the city. As someone else posted, the BART is supposed to be very good and efficient.
