San fran where to stay

To All

Me and OH are doing the west coast in April/May. Sorted out Vegas, staying MGM Grand and watchin the Ricky Hatton fight!!!

But were abit stuck for everywhere else really.

Main question on this thread is where is better to stay in SF the docks or the centre. Seems more expensive on the dock?

Been looking at the hilton in SF but if people have better recomendations please let me know

Any views welcome

Cheers

    IMHO Centre.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • I'd say the centre, if I remember its union square area??, ok at the docks but its more for alcatraz and pier 39 which for me was a bit tacky, alcatraz great though!

i'd go centre too. we stopped here -
    http://www.hotelunionsquare.com/
was right in the centre of the shops / restaurants etc.

The trams ran right past which shook the windows from 6am but that's part of the charm of the place!
As someone who goes for the cheaper end of things was very happy with this place.

san fran is so small you can easily walk all around the city anyway. i know we did!!

if you're planning on driving from vegas - it's a long way! we broke it up with a couple of nights just outside yosemite (in oakhurst - best western yosemite getaway). can thoroughly recommend this. i was more impressed with yosemite than i was with the grand canyon!
  • Yeah union square, I have a car but I believe its not the place to have one as they charge you a fortune to park anywhere.

Anyone know where I can park, is it just like the uk on the road is fine?

yep, that's the place. very reasonably priced. it's in a pretty small town with only a couple of restaurants. but the ones they have are very friendly!
as mentioned on the website it's 15 miles from yosemite. this is about as close as you'll get without stopping at somewhere in the park itself (i think there's only 1 hotel in there?).
the only bad point was my misses got stung on the back of her leg by a hornet (there were a few of them about getting the water from the air con units) when we were opening the door to the room for the first time!
after that, it was superb. we drove around yosemite for one of the days. 120 miles and only saw 1 other car.

PS - I tried to drive to "whiskey falls" to see if whiskey did indeed fall from there. it's up a track that is 6 inches narrower than my rental. lots of scratches from twigs down each side :)
  • I seriously would not take a car into SF. If you are, get a hotel in the suburbs and take public transport in. You will probably pay $50 plus to park anywhere overnight in the city, and no you can't park on the road!

As for hotels, SF is so compact I would say it doesn't matter too much where you stay, most things are well within walking distace.

It was $12 per day last March. Cheaper than the freezing cold 100 year old trolley and much more comfortable.

when i went to SF i dropped the car off at a parking garage and picked it up 3 days later. walked everywhere. you miss so many of the sights when you're driving

if that $12 is for 24 hours then that is indeed fantastic. By no means the norm though.
