I've got a question for you all......
Do you think kids should know about debts? Obviously they we are teaching them not to make the mistakes we've done but I just wondered about discussing our current situation
The reason I ask is that DS asked me yesterday if we have debts - we were watching the news, all about the credit crunch etc. I told him we had, and he started to think. A few minutes later, he asked if we sold our house, and moved somewhere smaller, would it solve our problems. He later decided he loved our house, and said that moving isnt an option
Now, I've always tried to keep that side of things from our kids. They've always known we arent made of money, but not about the debt situation. I just dont want either of them worrying about it all like I have to. Should I have lied to DS and said we have no debtIs it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:

no, not at all spud. He doesn't need to know the nitty gritty, but at least knowing you have some can make him think about the situation etc.
The reason I got so embarrassed by debt and put my head in the sand from the age of 18 is because as a kid, more than once I was sent to my nanna and grandads (and once a friend of my Mum's) to ask to borrow money for the gas or electric bill. It always had something like 'we are going to get cut off' and I felt so ashamed handing it over - in particular the time a family friend was asked. It was never explained to me - it was just this hush hush thing that wasn't spoken about - my nanna used to put money in plastic bank bag and say 'don't tell your grandad'.....I became incredibly ashamed of debt and before this site couldn't talk about it and it's because of these experiences.
So, after the ramble, yes I think you did the right thing to talk about it in the way you did. I wish I'd had things explained to me, just a little bit really."Stay Wonky":D

Thanks BB.
I really dont want him to worry about it. He's the kind of person that in a month, or even six, he'll suddenly come up with another comment, so he ponders things for ages.
OMG worse, what if he discusses it at school   :eek:Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:

BB that's spooky - I read maxmy 's name like that too and told them aaaaaages ago - don't think he/she was very impressed !Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0 -
lemontree - I used to help with the collecting every Thursday and Friday evening, did it for 2 or 3 years if I remember, my brother took over when I went to Uni and then both my sisters after that. I only went out on the round a couple of times though.
He did have a customer who was a Chief Inspector who would have a single tot of rum waiting for him at Christmas or on very snowy mornings to help him through the round - my dad used to be there around 8am!!!!"Stay Wonky":D
