We warned though that most modern heat pumps are modulating, which means that during the warm months, they barely have to work to generate hot water, hence the low noise. As the temperature plumets towards freezing, it will be running on full blast and will be a bit noisier!

These are known as Inverter systems.

Even when running at full blast in cold winter they will still be quieter than the older fixed speed systems.

In general, yes, though of course that will still be dependant on individual systems...

There seems to have been an emphasis on the heat pump unit on this thread, and the water storage tank has been forgotten/not thought about. Given that there are so many out there on the market with claims to be suitable for ASHP which are actually worth considering?.

I would certainly consider Kingspan with the Mitsubishi Ecodan, or the sanyo CO2 ECO tank, Daikin use a 3 part system which is not a sealed refrigerant circuit set up. Dimplex, and Danfoss are similar to the Sanyo tank, (heatstore) although I have no experience of the Dim' & Dan' due to them being right expensive at the moment. However you can call Telford, Range, Manco, newark, McDonald engineering, etc...etc.. and spec your own size / tappings / coil. the coil length is the most important feature of the cylinder at lower flow temps, in the early days we used a solar twin coil and joined the two coils together. hope this helps.

    Thanks for your reply Albyota.

On doing a bit of surfing it seems that Kingspan manufactures many types of hot water cylinders Range, Albion, Copperform etc.
I think the Kingspan being used with the Mitsubushi is a Range Tribune HE which can be bought pre plumbed.

Not allowed to post the link.

Are the Heatrae Sadia Megaflo's worth considering with a ASHP as they seem to be very popular?

I dont know for sure if they can as I have not needed to spec one, the correct cylinders to use with ASHP's have a much longer indirect coil, larger surface area.....about 3 metres long due to the lower flow temps from 55 to 58 degrees typically, the water needs to stay in the tank longer to give off its heat to the surrounding water, a lot of the cylinder manufacturers have got switched on to provide this option as they are going to be quite common.

An update to my previous post.

I was on the phone to Kingspan this afternoon and it seems that the HU(litre size) CP range of water storage tanks that are mated with the Ecodan are not the Range Tribunes as i thought. They are inferior to the Tribune in that they are made from copper and only carry a two year warranty. The person i spoke to advised me to buy a Tribune made from stainless steel with a twentyfive year warranty.

I think that as Mitsi fell out with Gledhill with their boilermate unit, they needed a quick fix, copper has a better conductivity than stainless but must run at a lower pressure, as for the warranty issue, it won't be long before most cylinder manufacturers offer 25 yrs (or die out) my OSO stainless has. How helpful were Kingspan?

  • Well the chap i spoke to was helpful enough in that he answered all my questions. Are they generally not helpful?
  • Hi all
I am a heating engineer and I have only started installing heat pumps in the last year.
there is a hot water cylinder on the market that I have been installing that may be of use to you called an ESP Ecocent. It is an unvented hot water cylinder with an 810 watt ashp fitted to the top of it, and it works on heat recovery by ducting warm air from where it is not needed. this unit can also be used on solar as well.
