My Broadband speed

I'm supposed to be on 4 Mbps blueyonder cable, and I get (nearly) this speed at some times of the day -- but in the evening it can be anything from about 1 Mbps upwards. Probably a contention 'feature', where lots of people all trying to use the same bit of fibre...!

How much are you paying? NTL have upgraded all tiers and it is now like this:jonnymeldrum wrote:I am currently on NTL and I was originally on 512k broadband but i then upgraded it to 1Meg. I have done the speed test and it appears that they have not upgraded me. What do you think?
Downstream 537 Kbps (67.1 KB/sec) 579 Kbps (inc. overheads)
1mb - £17.99
2mb - £24.99
3mb/10mb - £34.99 (might be £37.99, I cant remember)
Phone them up, because it seems you are not getting your proper speed...0 -
Yeah, I paying for the £17.99 1mb.0

well on 1mb you should be downloading at about 125KB/s. go to http://192.168.100.1/ and login as user name and password both root. Then click operation configuration on the left hand side and it should tell you what speed tier you are currently on... Maybe NTL forgot to actually bump up your speed.jonnymeldrum wrote:Yeah, I paying for the £17.99 1mb.0 -

If your downstream is 537 then you must be on the 1M package or higher because this is more than 512K (you would get up to 490K on a 512K connection). Bear in mind the speed test measures not just your broadband connection speed but also the speed of the internet and servers between you and the speed test website. So for a 537 speed, there is a bit of a bottleneck somewhere slowing down your access. An up to speed 1M connection should give you around 980K downstream speed.
To find out what your connection speed really is (ie the speed you use to talk to the BT exchange or NTL) you need to check your router/ADSL modem stats and find the downstream connection speed.0
