I was told you can choose whatever suits you, but to get a full month's interest it's best to get it in on the 1st.

it can go in on any date you specify. On this thread, I opened up one of these accounts yesterday and I was asked if I am a taxpayer as otherwise I could register (via IR85) for gross interest. I explained that I am a taxpayer in the current (2005/2006) tax year but from 6 April I would become a non-taxpayer. She said then that as the interest would not be credited until December I could complete the form there and then. I have another couple of fixed rate bonds with Birmingham Midshires and Halifax which mature in May and November respectively. Would it be in order to send my IR85 forms to them now also, or should I wait till April 6th? I believe (Correct me if I am wrong, but I think it is the tax year in which the interest is paid is what matters?)

The R85 declaration often has a year marked on it and state something to the effect:
I am unlikely to have income over my annual limit, or the saver is unlikely to have income over their
limit, this year (box 4 on the Helpsheet)

Personally, I would try not to complicate things for the IR, by keeping dates and declarations simple. So when the IR desk clerk looks at your tax code for the current year and then the R85 declaration, they are likely to be confused. Remember, they don't know that it matures in December.

If you would like definitive clarification then the IR's helpline is: 0845 980 0645
