What rescue did you go to? Many rescues have their dogs in foster homes so they can be assessed and then placed in the most suitable home. You might have to wait for the right dog to come along, but it will be worth it!

If you do choose to go down the breeder route, please do plenty of research, make sure they are reputable breeders who breed healthy dogs with sound temperaments. Good breeders will have waiting lists for their litters, and will want their pubs to go to the best home possible. Please don't buy from newspaper or internet ads - these are unlikley to be reputable breeders, and may be puppy farmers, backyard breeders etc.
Have a look at Where NOT to buy a puppy and also Buying a puppy or dog for some good tips. You can also do a search for litters in your area."No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -
I have been looking at staffys for a while now. We went to the rescue today and saw a 1 year old but as she was a stray they have no history on her so were being a bit wary about her, even though she seems quite friendly.
Were thinking that we might get a pup and then we can bring it up ourself. How much should i expect to pay? anyone know anywhere/anyone in Darlington area?
Thanks
Please don't be wary of them, reputable rescues will not rehome dogs with out assessing them, and you to make sure you are a suitable match. Just because they are not aware of the full background of an animal (which isn't always the case, as some rescue dogs are handed in by their owners when they can't keep them i.e. divorce etc) they will assess the dog properly.

at 1 year old you still shouldn't have any problems training her if she still needs it. My cross was around 5 years old when i got him from the dogs home and was also a stray - in the dog home for 6 months before i got him.
He's been absolutely no trouble at all since i got him.
Price of a puppy will depend on if you get papers with it or not.0 -

Coming from Darlington you are in a great area for contacts. Please make sure you go through a reputable breeder - contact the staffordshire Bull Terrier Club (in any area) and they will put you in touch with someone who may currently have a litter of good breeding standard.0 -
Our beautiful Tiger Brindle Staffey George, was the most gorgeous, cute and cuddly dog you could ever come across. He didn't have a bad bone in his body. He just wanted to play with anyone and everyone. He guarded and watched over my son from being a baby. Unfortunately George was tragically taken away from us at the young age of 5, when hit by a car - overexuberance when he saw a cat, he bolted after it. But at least he went doing something he loved.
I would love another one, but don't think I could ever replace him.
Staff are beautiful and soft and loving. A very good choice in my opinion.

And don't forget that NO MATTER whether you get a puppy or a rescue you MUST do proper training! Going to training classes not only helps you become a good handler, teaches your dog basic commands but also helps you socialise your dog in a safe and controlled environment.
With a dog that already has bad press it is vital you make sure YOUR dog is not badly mannered or downright dangerous and if you get a puppy then you need to start early unless you happen to be an experienced dog trainer! So puppy socialising classes are a must! Budget up to £5 per group lesson a week for this!
If you get a rescue i would also recommend getting a qualified and recommended trainer to come to your home and help you for the first lesson at least. Even if this is just to get you a second view on how to help it settle in faster
