I agree with most of the sentiments here, something home made is fantastic, my ideal would be breakfast in bed (will have to be dh doing it though but ds could help) and maybe a small bunch of dafs (my favourites) as I never have flowers at other times...

I would love it if my girls made me something when they have grown up, my mum however is a bit like one of the other mentioned and although is great in most ways, seems to consider monetry value as the most important thing  although she might not agree to that and it might be me reading her wrong...anyway out of interest how would I get started with jewellery making? I would love to try that and make something for her this year (and see how it went down lol)

It's a great idea if they look right, ie you're crafty/arty and the gift is a nice one regardless of what you spent on it.

A green and yellow macaroni necklace made with love by a four year old is cute and to be treasured, not so much when it's made by a thirty four year old.

at christmas being short of a stocking pressie and money for my mum - i made her some home made shortbread and packed it up for her - my mum was made up with her home made shortbread ( i got a friend with really neet handwrighting to write a gift tag) she also admonished me for stating how much it must have cost .. until i told her i made it myself as it was cheaper - she was gobsmaked!! and admitted it was so much better home made than than the fake hand made stuff you can buy at ridiculsa prices!!

home made is made with love - is that what pressies are about.

Have to agree that OPs gifts are thoughtful and made with love and would mean so much to me if l was the lucky recipient.

  • For many years, right from being a child to an adult I tried to please my mam with the gifts I bought. For whatever reason my mam has always had problems with accepting gifts graciously and I have shed many tears over the years at my rejected efforts. (Don't get me wrong apart from this she has always been a great mam, but I think her childhood has a lot to do with this). I have to now accept that if my mam actually likes a gift that I have got her as a present it is a bonus, but I think I have finally found the key - My eldest DD has just finished a degree in photography and one of the presents she gave her nana was a framed portrait of herself. I was so surprised when mam said to me "I have got one of the best presents I have ever had from Ellie". I think I realised then that the way to my mums heart was through carefully thought out gifts that evoke memories and not through material things. This year at Christmas one of the gifts I gave her was a freebie (except for postage) from vistaprint, I made her a desktop calender with photographs of the family as we grew up , culminating in a photograph of my granddaughter, her only great granddaughter. My father died on Christmas day 2 years ago, so I wasn't sure if a reminder of my dad would help or hurt at this time of year, but amazingly my mam actually rang me to say that she loved her present. - I was so pleased, because I so worried that she wouldn't be able to accept it, as has happened in the past. This has taught me that monetary value means nothing, it truly is the thought that counts.
