Wireless Again! How do you improve a weak signal

Well i posted this question on the wireless board weeks ago without a response so at risk of being told that i should have put my question where no one answers them here goes...
I used to have a great wireless signal from 2 houses across the road when my PC was in the front room of my house(close to the opposite neighbours routers). I've moved the PC to a back room extension and now get a crap signal. My wireless adaptor is a USB type so i put it on the end of 2 x 5m USB active repeater extension cables so the adaptor could be left at the front of the house with the PC at the back. The signal is still crap.
I've looked on ebay for options but really don't know the most effective solution of getting my free wireless broadband back.
Options so far include extending the USB leads with a powered hub OR using a short USB lead out the back window but with a super high gain adaptor, OR using an ethernet bridge wireless adaptor that will require external power but will allow a long ethernet lead to put the adaptor in a good signal area again.
Does anyone know the best option (without paying for my own broadband of course)!

There's a difference between money saving and asking how to use someone elses broadband connetcion. If you offered to share a broadband connection then that'd be different.Happy chappy0

Maybe the poster hasn't considered that his free service is at the detriment of the person paying. If they have a download limit he may well take them over that and deny them a service at all. I think it's called theft and I'm sure there was a case recently in the courts where the person was fined quite heavily.HLK

Although my next door neighbours 1 meg wireless is unprotected, the truth is that the connection i share is 8meg unlimited bulldog used by the owner for buisness during normal working hours, it is paid for by his company, and lives opposite. I use it evenings and weekends only so it doesn't really affect their performance. It is security protected for me to use it and i assure you that i have the owners agreement and they are more than rewarded. The owner has infact offered to move his router for me but it is already in their front bedroom.
So, keep up the jokes but does anyone know how to improve the signal or should i expect no serious answers from now on?Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j

The SSID is a name unique to your network (hopefully) setup by the Network Administrator as part of the Network Security - if you had to setup your own home network you would know this .. and if your neighbour has given you access to his network then surely he gave you his ? Or is he running totally unptotected ? If the latter - I'd have a word.. and that would be OMG!HLK
