Valentines Day....Skint this year-help!
Stronger
Unfortunatly, due to various factors, this year I am stoney broke (que the violins.....)
Normally i really treat my better half to something lovely, a gift or top quality meal etc......Not going to be able to do that this year, and to tell the truth i'm literally penniless till the end of the month. She knows this and has said that she understands.
Doesn't make me feel any better about myself tho, as i really like to show her how much i love her and Valentines is the perfect time (even if things are dear!!!)
Thinking of cooking a meal at home, which im sure will be great, but what else can i do?
Any positive suggestions welcome.
Thanks all, i can't be the only one in this situation?

How about a "promise" jar.
Get an empty jar or box and fill it with little pieces of paper (heart shaped if you like)
I promise to - bring you breakfast in bed
run your bath
massage your feet
etc etc.
The promises can be anything you like and she can redeem them when she wants. It will not cost anything but some time.
Other ideas that have been mentioned before were burning her favourite music on a cd or taping some slushy films and watching them with home made popcorn and a bottle of wine."This site is addictive!"
Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA

One year I cut out hearts out of red crepe paper and filled hubby's jacket pocket with them along with his brief case etc.
Only trouble was I had to admit what I had the night before as he annouced he had an important meeting the next day......2014 Target;

Surely what really matters is that you are happy with each other and comfortable with that. After all, Valentine's Day is only another 'American Festival' that we feel that we have to conform with.
I do give my OH something but hate the fact that he feels 'obliged' to give me some 'garage flowers'!!!!!!0 -
The meal in sounds lovely! How about running her a bath whilst you're concocting the food, put candles round it and give her a glass of wine/gin and tonic.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 #18 £2021.83 declared0

someone on the freebies board a while ago posted a link to a wordsearch generator where you can pick all the words, then when someone solves it there is a hidden message made up from the remaining letters. my BF has his birthday close to valentine's so i've used to it to make a personal birthday card, but it should work pretty well for valentine's day too.
and if it's something that you've put time and effort into, it should go down really well - i'd prefer something personal and thoughtful over an expensive generic present any day.
here's the link : wordsearch generator:happyhear0 -
Personally I think Valentines Day is seriously over rated. I hate the idea of being bought something because "everyone else is doing Valentines Day" I do not need to be told that on this day, I have to show my OH how much he means to me, I can do that any day - rant over, sorry.
I would much rather receive a surprise gift or treat on another day, something out of the blue and not expected. I love the idea of a "promise jar" as elona has mentioned, and I also love the idea that I would get a nice meal made for me, whilst I relax and pamper myself in the bathroom.
How about putting together a photo album of some of the special times you have shared? or framing a special picture or writing her a poem.
