Bathroom refurbishment - let down by plumber

Options
I had a quote of £1880.00 (£1600 + £280 vat) for the following:

Remove and dispose of existing bathroom suite, tiles and shower. Remove boxing around the bath and replace boxing under toilet suitable for tiling. Make solid the floor (we had water damage) and fit new suite and shower. Patch plaster as necesarry and partial tile and grout around bath, sink and toilet.

This quote does not include the supplying of tiles, shower or suite.

Is this too expensive? It seems a little high in price to say he is not supplying.

The guy did say that if we took out this job with him, he would sort out our central heating for free which includes draining, flushing, adding inhibitor and balancing the system.

Can you haggle with builders to reduce the price?

Any advice would be great.

I spoke to him again and he knocked off the VAT making the job £1600.

    Is this any better?

Seems a little on the high side, how many mts of tiling? and is it a seperate shower cubical? or just over the bath(electric or off your H&C water)
And what area you live in South/North.

I think it is 5.5 sq meters of tiling. No cubicle. Electric shower.

    I am in Yorkshire.

He is doing the radiators included in this price (his price would have been £178)

We were let down my plumbers and central heating people when coming to do quotes.

Don't they like work?? It was a full replacement as well in a stripped house.

Easiest job they would have had all year.

Some good guys have just finished today so we are a step closer to moving back in.

I used to be married to a plumber and he used to take all the work offered to him , and then he would just let people down when he couldn't fit all the work into his schedule............very unfair way of doing business........ and guess who got to answer all the phone calls from his irate customers!!!!

  • A plumber used to live next door to us. He agreed to install a new bathroom suite, including removing the old one, plus install a new power shower and fully tile three of the four walls all for £400 cash. Did a great job too. His only request was that we allowed him to do it over two weeks so he could fit it in between other jobs. This was a couple of years ago and the grout's still clean, the tiles are still firm and the shower works a treat. Maybe gives you some idea of what value to put on it.
    am I missing something ??

totally understand what your saying but last yr we rang around abt 20 plumbers for a quote some said it wasnt worth coming out for some said they might come out some said they would call back some made times to call and didnt.. all the time i waited in for calls or missed visits.. we dont call plumbers out for nothing its because we want a job done at a fair price.. ive got a bathroom that needs ripping out and replacing by the time i move in july getting quotes in march fingers crossed and hope will be able to get the job done.. but not holding my breath..
