hmm interesting, that must be it then - no credit history.

Seems funny because I have had a savings account with them for 6 years and have made no withdrawels, surely that's a good thing?

I really wanted a debit card as retailers don't seem to accept cheques thesedays, they told me to "use the account" well I can't "use the account" if I haven't got a debit card not can I? Endless cycle

Do you think if I just debit and credit my account periodically this will build up a credit history? and how come some banks just give you a debit card?

    This is so confusing

    thanks guys for helping me
appreciate it, I wish they teach things like this in schools, more useful then learning what happened in 1066 in my opinion :rotfl:
I used my cash card account to withdraw cash and I also set up one direct debit from it.

One of their sales assistants advised me just to pay £200 in and out repeatedly and that would probably do it - so I suppose if you could be bothered you could try that (i think it has to be from a non NW account too so your NW savings doesn't count) They never let me upgrade which i found really annoying as i had lots of savings in there- just I didnt use it that much because of the lack of debit card and not that much regular income as a student. Maybe they would give me one now but I opened a different current account with a different bank. (just find it slightly annoying espec as they said if i opened another account then i probably would get a debit card- illogical)
I am not sure why their criteria is stricter than other places- maybe they have too many people opening accounts with them and only using abroad?

Having a savings account does not create a credit history. You need to have evidence where you buy something on credit and then pay it off. One of the first things I did was get a store card for a department store called Woodward & Lothrop, that was the start of my credit history. I also had the added disadvantage of not having a social security number.

I am not sure what the equivalent would be over here. A mobile phone contract would probably help. I think its a case of them seeing you handling money responsibly.
    £2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far

+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.

    Thanks for that guys.

I will stick with Nationwide I think and open a Lloyds account and hope I will just get a debit card with lloyds and in the mean time build up a credit history with Nationwide in hope that in the year I will be able to get one from them.

If not, well I guess I can try for a credit card?

Lloyds account comes with a debit card as standard.

I can back up what the others have said about applying for a new Flexaccount online rather than upgrading. I got a cash card only when I set up the account 18 months ago, which I think was because I'd just moved here from New Zealand a few months prior and had no credit history.

I applied for an upgrade to a debit card twice since, and was refused both times. Then just today I've applied online for a new Flexaccount, and not only did they offer me a debit card and cheque guarantee card, but a gold credit card as well! So somethings obviously chimped in their upgrade system, definitely try applying for a new account online instead.

Same here. Three times I was turned down in a branch to "upgrade". I bet they didn't want to as it was too much hassle to setup a new account when they could be sitting there chatting. Was accepted immediately when I applied online :D

My girlfriend went in to the local branch at the weekend to ask about getting her cashcard account upgraded to a debit card so she could use it as her main account but was declined until they had seen evidence of 'proper use' (its a holiday account at the moment).

Without a debit card this was never going to happen so she applied for a second account last night and got offered one with a Debit Card straight away.

Crazy but if thats the way to get one then so be it...

I'm sorry so you're saying if I apply on-line for another FlexAccount they offer a debit card straight away? I don't get this, why would they do this, it seems a bit stupid to me :s

Did you guys do this within a particular timeframe like a few months after having it declined?
