I'm going to bookmark this thread as well for info for my son.

He's at uni but the sandwich shop he worked in closed down so he is now unemployed and completely out of money. He has tried every single place he can think of for a job and so far has had one interview and that was only as a Saturday boy.

He has application forms in for all the local supermarkets but hasn't heard from any yet.

Incidentally for anyone interested in Tesco you can download the application form online rather than go and get one from the store:
    http://www.tesco-careers.com/home/you/stores/application-process/team-positions

Good luck to anyone job hunting!

  • Ok, here's my take:

Tesco - Never worked for them but seems busy at the store, staff are short on the ground due to most of work being on night shift.

Sains - Decent, however not the best employer as they perhaps once were, expected to do a lot more, usually disorganised stores and a lot of checkout calls. Pay isn the best.

ASDA - Lot of staff, decent pay rate on nights and days, the walmart chant doesnt happen now, asda are treated as their own company, they have team building exercises in inductions, whats wrong with that?

ALDI / LIDL / Netto - High pay rate, but 400% work compared to Tesco, only a few of you, so no room for shirking.

Just looked online at the Sainsbury's jobs, now showing no vacancies at any level in any position at any store in the whole neighbourhood. Ho hum, lets hope Tesco or Asda have more vacancies otherwise my poor son will starve.

I was wondering what the other supermakret are paying aswell! Morrisons staff are getting a payrise to £6 an hour from February, I just wondered what other supermarkets pay? Im sure we get a lot less than the other supermarkets, I just wondered how much less! So if anybody knows what the other companies pay, let us all know! Thanks
  • i work for tesco and i'm on £6.24 p/h but it depends on location. i also get time and a half on a sunday plus a night premium because i work after 9pm.
they're a great company to work for, i feel very looked after.

Can you ladies tell me what the pay rates are now for nights? in the big supermarkets.

I worked "shelf filling" for Asda some years ago for an agency (on nights) and got paid nothing like the regular staff got paid.

Am thinking of trying for a night job but on the checkout not shelf filling.
I really enjoyed the "night" as it is quieter and I'm a bit of a night owl anyway!

I'm going to subscribe to this thread as it would be great for one of my friends.

She desperately needs a job. One problem though is that she hates coming face to face with people a lot of the time e.g. working on tills. If she were to apply to supermarkets would she have to work on the till or could she say that she isn't comfortable with doing that?

She has great organizational skills and is a dab hand with computers and has a good telephone manner so maybe working in the office of a supermarket might suit her better?

    xx

I think they now train virtually every one on till work - but she could primarily work stacking?

They dont realy have offices anymore - everyone is on the shop floor - including some of the managers. Tesco only seem to have payroll in an office

from my experience at sainsburys theres price control, stock control and personnel which are both in an office, price control is where they check tickets are on display and print new ones off, she would need to learn how to use the computers
