  • Hi,

I am starting a new corporate clothing business....i have my company name, domains etc available, being set up with suppliers accounts, and web site and logo origination ready to begin. I am still a little baffled by the tax/vat/sole trader side of it. I am looking for info on how/where i register the company with the HMRC and what else i have to do before i can 'start trading'. I found a website companiesmadesimple.com which seems to do a lot for you for a fee and has very good reviews on forums. Do you think this would be helpful to go through a company like this, and if so, what are the next steps to get trading when what this company offers is complete?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks:j

I think it might be worth you contacting a few chartered accountants for their advice - that looks like a site jsut for setting up a limited company which is not necessarily what you want to do. An accountant should be able to advise you on the pros and cons of setting up a limited company or just starting off as a sole trader, and explain about VAT, what you should do and claim in your accounts. Go for small firms and check they are qualified with a professional body- most will probably give you an initial consultation free.
  • I am wanting to buy and then sell on products for a specific market, but the kind of things I want I can't find. I am completely inexperienced in this and don't know how I go about finding a supplier than does already make the items or could make them. There are so many wholesalers out there, but you often have to sign up for them before you can check to see the items they have which, obviously I don't really want to do unless it is free of course. Also how would I know if they were reputable.

As you can see, I only have the idea at the moment and need a lot of advice to go further. Thanks in advance.

unless product is really unusual you should be able to find some suppliers of some sort online - i have been researching my product range for ages. If you really cant find anything think of any trade shows where they may appear - trade shows also have websites which then list who is going to be there so you can go through the list. otherwise have you seen some products in a shop - remember the supplier name from the packaging and then Google them (I do this if in town and see something that might be ok) or else look for competitor websites (even if not direct) online and see if you can find a description of whose stuff they sell. unless its something bizarre that i wont have a clue about pm me and ill see if i can find something :)

hi ive been reading through all of this and is there another thread? as I have seen one mentioned but do not know where it is? I have done most of my research so just now need to save money to buy stock and get website up and running. I am doing mystery shopping etc to try to save money to save up for the stock. I will not be borrowing anything to do this and starting with a minimal small amount of stock and money to cover expenses and then go from there. I need to find basic bank account only and get company name registered and I think thats it!

if there is another thread with good advice id love to join as it is a bit daunting.

i have opened up 2 fitness classes , now i want to start my own buisness , i have gone as far as open up a buisness account at the A+l building society.
i still claim job seekers allowance as my classes only bring in around £80 a week, when i last signed on and told them i was going to declare all sorts of forms with one of the forms asking me "what date did i go self-employed from ! ".
As soon as i give a date does the tax man come on to me straight away even though i am bringing home £80 a week.
Plus how much i am i allowed to earn before my job seekers allowance gets effected ?.
