Hello I recently started up my own business as a vegan bistro in Ayr. I wanted to work for myself as I was getting a zero hour contract at my previous job. I contacted business gateway, my local council and the princes trust for free advice and access to grants, loans and funding. I not only got funding but a lot of advice, which in itself is worth considerably more than just the money.
Sourcing suppliers was my next challenge. I find haggling difficult and uncomfortable but simple asking for discounts then waiting for a response can usually get you something. I now use a company called Greencity whole foods. Not only is there service quick but also friendly. I didn't get much of a discount for them but did have more success from my coffee supplier. I use a company called Roundsquare Roastery - they roast coffee and also supply machinery. By using my "ask them for a discount then be silent" technique (patent pending) I managed to get free delivery and machine install. Further to that I got free servicing and machine maintentence.. We have been open for just over 7 months now, so still increadible new, but I won't be as far ahead if it wasn't for the funding available and my great suppliers. And of course my ask then be silent haggling technique. I'm almost certain it made a difference. Give it a go. In this business climate every £ is important.0
